The referendum was attended by more than 1\/3 of the number of people on the electoral rolls. Thus, for the question “Are you for reducing the number of MEPs from 101 to 61?”<\/strong> The participation rate was 39.78%. The valid votes cast were distributed as follows: FOR – 744 529 votes; AGAINST – 266 188 votes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

For the question, “Are you for people to be able to dismiss (remove) deputies from office if they do not properly fulfill their obligations?”<\/strong>, The participation rate was 39.74%. The valid votes cast have been distributed as follows: FOR – 808 266 votes; AGAINST – 202 497 votes.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the DPM’s previous press briefing, Andrian Candu said that once the Parliament starts work, the PD will prepare all the necessary mechanisms to amend the Supreme Law.<\/p>\n

“As for the withdrawal of the mandate and the status of the Member, we need to talk to our development partners and the Venice Commission. We will come up with legal solutions. It’s a good and remarkable result, it’s our party’s success,” Candu declared.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Moldova.org<\/strong> analyzed positions of the Moldovan parties about the PDM initiatives before the elections and the referendum happened.<\/p>\n

One of the authors of the draft decision on the Republican referendum, Sergiu Sirbu, deputy chairman of the PDM and ex-member of the Moldovan Communist Party, is convinced that if citizens will demand the reduction of the number of deputies and their revocation, the Constitution will be changed in order for these two provisions to be legal.<\/p>\n

Consequently, if the number of deputies is not changed, the Democrats’ plan is only to be revoked by those elected on the uninominal constituencies.<\/em> This structure, according to Sirbu, will ensure an efficient mix of MPs who will be more “on the ground” while others will be dealing with public policies. If the number of MPs is reduced, the 51 constituencies could be restructured in 61, eliminating the national constituency. In this case, all 61 can be dismissed at the will of the people.<\/p>\n

“What was the point of having 101 when more than half of them have been sleeping for four years, not making any and not visiting any localities? They could at least visit localities and examine people’s problems, lobb those problems at the central level,” declared Sirbu.<\/p>\n
