Maia Sandu, the leader of the Party of Action and Solidarity, declared recently in an interview for RFE\/RL<\/a> that the opposition is not allowed to properly run its electoral campaign. \u201cWe have several examples illustrating how this governance violates the standards of free and fair elections,\u201d she claimed.<\/p>\n

The PAS leader mentioned the harassment in the form of allegations brought by the ruling parties. The extra-parliamentary opposition parties (PAS and DTPP) were accused of being controlled by the foreign governments like the Russian one, involvement in money laundering or financing from illegal sources. Besides, she mentioned that the opposition parties\u2019 members and the activists in the territory are being supervised by the police.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur activists are intimidated every day. They are told that they will lose their jobs and even that they will be arrested. So, the Democratic Party uses all the available means to scare the opposition.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

On December 13th<\/sup>, Maia Sandu and Andrei Nastase, the leaders of the political bloc \u201cACUM\u201d attended the last session of this year of the European Parliament. They also had meetings with several political leaders and senior officials of the European institutions. The leaders of the bloc presented to the European Parliament a report regarding the recent abuses of the power, including the intimidation of the opposition political parties, the representatives of civil society and press by the Democratic Party and the public institutions subordinated to it.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe presented this information to the European officials and, obviously, everyone was frightened by the scale of the allegations and their falsity.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cCitizens have great hopes in the EU, given that we are left without the state institutions\u2019 defence in Moldova, as they are subordinated to oligarchic interests,\u201d said Maia Sandu while highlighting the importance of a partnership existence between the EU and the Moldovan extra-parliamentary opposition parties in order to establish democracy in Moldova.<\/p>\n

In November 2018, a parliamentary commission from the Republic of Moldova, created for analysing the immixture of the Open Dialog Foundation in the internal state affairs, issued a report<\/a> claiming that the Open Dialog Foundation, whose founder is Ludmila Kozlowska, was funded from obscure and illegal sources. Thus, the PAS and DTPP representatives who participated to an event organised by the Open Dialog Foundation and the EU Parliament were alleged as being financed from illegal sources as well. On this occasion, Ludmila Kozlovska was called for hearings<\/a> in a criminal case initiated by the Prosecutor’s Office for Combating Organized Crime and Special Causes from Chi\u0219in\u0103u.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe ask the society to not encourage the talks on this subject as this is a lie launched by the DPM in the style of Kremlin propaganda. It aims to amplify deception and divert attention from serious problems and investigations that should be conducted,\u201d it is declared in a PAS press release.<\/a><\/p>\n
