While people in the Moldovan SSR gathered in 1989 on the main square of the capital to request the officialization of the Romanian language and the Latin script, people in Romania were fighting in one of the most violent revolutions in the contemporary history. Both countries were heading to the elimination of the communist power. Then, the so-called “Bridge of flowers” in 1990 happened. Thanks to the more open political reforms of the Soviet Union and the efforts of the local organisations, for the first time in the history citizens from the left and right banks of the Prut River could cross the border without any papers. Even though it happened only for few hours, there was a great hope that things could change, and an eventual union was possible.

In 1991, the Republic of Moldova gained its independence from the Soviet Union and the unification of Romania and Moldova seemed to be closer than ever. But something went wrong. Politicians didn’t come to an agreement. People of both countries were, just like in 1918, not asked about what they wanted. Russia strengthened its influence on the left bank of the Dniester River, in Transnistria. The civil war began in the Republic of Moldova in 1992.

The Great Union today

The Republic of Moldova and Romania are two countries that are part of the same nation. The last and most important power takeover was the Soviet occupation by the Red Army in 1940.
