Today, Daniel Danielsson – European Commission Director-General for European Neighborhood Policy – and Thomas Mayr Harting – General Manager of the European External Action Service for Europe and Central Asia – is in Chisinau to reaffirm the EU’s commitment to bring tangible benefits to Moldovan citizens.<\/p>\n

This visit comes amid a continuous deterioration of the rule of law and democracy in our country. The European Union expects the authorities of the Republic of Moldova to take urgent and immediate action to remedy the situation.<\/p>\n\n

The focus of the EU is:<\/h3>\n
    \n
  1. Ensuring that future parliamentary elections are organized in a credible, inclusive and transparent manner. This includes ensuring adequate international monitoring and ensuring fair conditions for the\u00a0opposition parties, including in terms of registration and the media;<\/li>\n
  2. Involvement of the in-depth, impartial and comprehensive pursuit of bank fraud exposed in 2014; to recover the appropriated funds and to bring all those responsible to justice, regardless of any political affiliation and without delay;<\/li>\n
  3. Substantial engagement in judicial reform to guarantee the quality, transparency, impartiality,\u00a0and independence of the judiciary.<\/li>\n
  4. Fighting high-level corruption, including by ensuring the effective implementation of the asset-based reporting system for all high-level actors.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    In view of this deterioration and in line with the strict conditionality principle, the European Commission has taken the decision to substantially recalculate financial assistance and redirect support to projects that have a direct and positive impact on Moldovan citizens.<\/p>\n

    Payments from EU macro-financial assistance and budget support programs have been put on hold, pending concrete progress in the areas mentioned above.<\/p>\n

    The EU will continue to pay close attention to all issues relevant to the preparation and conduct of parliamentary elections in the Republic of Moldova.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
