The Party of Socialists of Republic of Moldova (PSRM) organised on November 18th<\/sup> a national rally in the city centre of Chi\u0219in\u0103u. The main goal of the meeting, according to socialists<\/a>, was protesting against the current government \u201cthat moves Moldova in the wrong direction.\u201d<\/p>\n

Seems like old times<\/h3>\n

Several representative populist slogans used in the past by the soviets reverberated during the rally. The most popular ones were \u201cturning the power in the hands of masses\u201d, \u201cwe will begin the Moldova\u2019s liberation\u201d and \u201cthere is still hope.\u201d<\/p>\n

The PSRM supporters got together and, just like in other mass gatherings organised by the party, were transported to Chi\u0219in\u0103u free of charge with special designated buses. Moreover, some people were noticed by our reporters<\/a> while distributing banknotes of 100 Lei (the Moldova\u2019s national currency).<\/p>\n

In the main square, the place where protesters gathered, an atmosphere of sadness dominates, accompanied by forced chants, bored clapping and alcohol whiff. There is a common sympathy for Russia-related topics of discussion: \u201cRussia is and will be a powerful state\u201d, advocates one of the rally participants, \u201cMy parents were brought in B\u0103l\u021bi for building this city. I don\u2019t understand why we are called occupants\u201d, she says in Russian. The protesters are not disappointed by the current government. They simply don\u2019t trust it and never did. But before supporting socialists, they voted for the Communist Party.<\/p>\n\n

The forms of manipulation<\/h3>\n

At the beginning of the rally, recorded by the privesc.eu platform, a short video presented \u201cthe overview of the past years\u2019 actions of the current corrupt and criminal regime\u201d in the PSRM eyesight. At first glance, the video displays a detailed description of the events and some reliable statistical data. At least, it strikes the crowd. Though, when analysing it carefully, one can recognise the classic forms of mass manipulation technics. First, creating a group emotion through the rhythmed, warrior music, sad images and powerful terms that create an emotional impact. Expressions like \u201cthe economy declined dramatically\u201d, \u201cthe currency was substantially depreciated\u201d, \u201cthe real income shrank drastically\u201d, \u201csocial genocide against the population\u201d were used.<\/p>\n

Right at the beginning of the film, several statements were made: \u201cDuring the government of the so-called supporters of the european integration, a dramatical decline of the economy happened, the Leu depreciated substantially, the real income shrank drastically, the quality of life for the big majority of the population collapsed. All actions of the current government were oriented to the liquidation of the Moldovan state.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n

Let\u2019s take it one by one. The \u201cdramatical decline of the economy\u201d <\/em>during the period of 2009-2018 is an abstractive and an exaggerated statement. According to the National Bureau of Statistics of the Republic of Moldova (NBS), Moldova\u2019s GDP<\/a> in current prices rose from 60.429 billion Lei to 150.369 billion Lei in the period of 2009 to 2017. Hence, there is no \u201cdramatical decline of the economy\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n

The same thing is available for the statement \u201cthe Leu depreciated substantially\u201d. <\/em>The currency against which the Leu has depreciated is simply not mentioned. It is true that there was a depreciation of the Moldovan Leu (MDL) in the period of 2015-2016, being influenced by several factors, including the so-called \u2018great Moldovan bank robbery<\/a>\u2019. In 2016, the average annual exchange rate of Leu against Euro reached 22.057 MDL for 1 Euro. Afterwards, the situation started to recover, in 2018, for example the exchange rate is 19.873 MDL for 1 Euro, according to the official website<\/a> of National Bank of Moldova (BNM).<\/p>\n

The claim that \u201cthe real income shrank drastically\u201d <\/em>is not more than a fiction. By having a look at the data from NBS, it can be observed that actually from 2009 to 2017 the average monthly gross real wage increased from 2944.4 Lei to 5815.5 Lei. The general income for all categories of population rose as well. Of course, due to the inflation rate the purchasing power of Moldovans didn\u2019t improve significantly, but that doesn\u2019t justify the falsely delivered information.<\/p>\n

The average monthly consumption per person boosted from 1217.4 Lei in 2009 to 2250.3 Lei in 2017, along with other standard of living indicators. Therefore, the affirmation \u201cthe quality of life for the big majority of the population collapsed\u201d <\/em>is also not accurate.<\/p>\n

Misleading statistics<\/h3>\n

The data manipulation and disinformation were applied by introducing the statistical data in a wrong way. For example, the level of the foreign debt seems to be inflated, stating that for 2011 it increased by 45%. No reference year and source of data was mentioned. Therefore, the number of 45% can mean anything, whereas the NBM official website<\/a> displays a difference of 13.75 % as compared to the last year (from 4.711 billion USD in 2010 to 5.358 billion USD 2011).<\/p>\n

On a dramatical music background it is announced that \u201cin 2014-2016 every second person can\u2019t find a job in Republic of Moldova.\u201d There is no explanation how this number is calculated, while an unemployment rate of 50% would suggest a total economic catastrophe for any country. In the case of Moldova, the unemployment rate reached 3.9% in 2014 and 4.2% in 2016, as the NBS report\u00a0<\/a>from 2018 states.<\/p>\n

The same report proves that another aspect mentioned in the frightening video, about closing 205 schools after the optimisation process in education, is incomplete. There is no correlation mentioned between the number of primary and secondary schools, and the number of registered pupils. Though, from 2014 to 2018, the number of pupils fell by 1.5% (from 341 thousand in 2014 to 335.6 thousand in 2016) and the decreasing trend still can be noticed.<\/p>\n

Another data manipulation was observed while referring to the country\u2019s exports in the period of 2014-2016. The video states that in the given time \u201cthe exports to Russia decreased by 325 million dollars\u201d and not even a word was mentioned about the increasing exports to the European Union countries that occurred in the same time. According to the NBS data<\/a>, the exports to Russia decreased between 2014-2016, but only by 190 million dollars, not 325 million dollars as it is falsely declared in the PSRM source. On the other hand, the exports to EU countries in 2016 increased by almost 85 million dollars and represented a share of 65% from the total exports.<\/p>\n

It seems that there is a sort of \u2018tradition\u2019 of overestimating the participants\u2019 number at such well organised rallies in Republic of Moldova. While the PSRM declared<\/a> that at the Sunday\u2019s rally participated around 30 thousand persons, the police estimated 12 thousand, whereas a number of about 10 thousand participants was recounted by iData, a private research company from Moldova.<\/p>\n

An important thing to be reminded is that the Party of Socialists got 24 seats in the Parliament<\/a> at the elections in 2014 and one of the Party\u2019s leaders<\/a> \u2013 Igor Dodon is nowadays the President of the country. Thus, it seems that they gather people in a rally to protest against the government they are a part of.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s even worse, is that those manipulation techniques work quite well on the misinformed and naive Moldovan population that is still nostalgic about the soviet times.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
