Accordingly, the human rights NGO &#8220;Promo-LEX&#8221; says that the children in Transnistria still suffer from Russia&#8217;s violations.<\/p>\n<p>On 19 October 2012, the Grand Chamber of the ECtHR condemned Russia for violating the right to education (Article 2, Protocol 1 of ECHR) of children in Transnistria, a breakaway region of Moldova where Russia has nearly direct control of. The Court found that Moldova is responsible for the violations, but also decided that Russia has to pay 1020 thousand euros of moral damage and 50 thousand euros of representation costs to the plaintiffs.<\/p>\n<p>The plaintiffs were citizens of Moldova, residents of the Transnistrian region- primarily parents, teachers, pupils-, who in 2004 and 2006 complained about the violation of the right to education, privacy, and non-discrimination. They were forced to accept education systems imposed by the Russia-backed &#8220;Pridnestrovian Moldovan Republic&#8221; or to leave for Latin script schools instead of the &#8220;Moldovan language&#8221; (Cyrillic\u00a0script) ones.<\/p>\n<p>One of the Latin-script schools\u00a0from Transnistria is the Lyceum &#8220;\u0218tefan cel Mare \u0219i Sf\u00e2nt&#8221; from the town of Grigoriopol. Forced to be closed in 2002 by the so-called Transnistrian authorities, the school had to move in the village of Doro\u021bcaia, which is on the territory controlled by the constitutional authorities. There, in Doro\u021bcaia, the pupils could study in Romanian, but then they have to make a daily 20 km trip to and from the school. Promo-LEX estimated that, during the 12 years of study, a pupil travels approximately 43000 kilometers from Grigoriopol to Doro\u021bcaia school, and back.
