On November 14th, the spokesperson of the Democratic Party of Moldova, Vitalie Gamurari, came up with a reaction<\/a> on the recent leak of an order issued by a Romanian prosecutor<\/a> to investigate Vladimir Plahotniuc over the allegations of organized crime, blackmailing, fraud and money laundering.<\/p>\n

Gamurari called media’s reports “a new manipulation campaign” on Vlad Plahotniuc being investigated in Romania. The Democrat spokesperson explains that the leaked document stipulated the investigation of the signaled violations of law, not necessarily against the Democrat leader:<\/p>\n

“It is a penal complaint forwarded by the accused Veaceslav Platon against Mr. Vlad Plahotniuc. Thus, if someone would submit a penal complaint tomorrow in Romania against anyone of us, the organs of investigation would do same, would launch the penal investigation to see if the submitted complaint is true or not”,\u00a0<\/em>declared Gamurari.<\/p>\n

He added that Plahotniuc has letters from Romania’s\u00a0Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism and from Bucharest Prosecution Office from June and August 2017, so he is allegedly not the suspect of any penal case. The spokesperson advised the media to consult the jurists in the case of the leaked order.<\/p>\n

According to the\u00a0leaked testimony and the corresponding prosecution order, Moldovan businessman Veaceslav Platon accused Plahotniuc of forcing him to participate in the acquisition of shares of companies and banks.\u00a0The Democrat oligarch allegedly got the shares in his possession through proxies like the Parliament speaker Andrian Candu, his close partner Sergey Yaralov, Vladimir Andronache and other persons from the circle of the Democratic Party of Moldova.\u00a0Platon,\u00a0condemned in Moldova to 18 years\u00a0of prison for frauds and money laundering, complained to the Romanian prosecutors that his multiple letters of complaints and demands were ignored by the National Bank and the investigation organs in Moldova, presumably under Vlad Plahotniuc\u2019s influence.<\/p>\n

Based on Platon\u2019s statements, Romanian Prosecutor Raluca Negulescu launched a penal investigation on the fact of constituting an organized crime group, blackmailing, fraud and money laundering. The investigation is possible because Plahotniuc is a Romanian citizen. The order of launching penal investigation against Vlad Plahotniuc dates back to 17 April 2017.<\/p>\n

Despite the fact he holds no governmental position, Vlad Plahotniuc is known for his control over the Government, judiciary branch, prosecution system and the anti-corruption bodies through his proxy Democratic Party, vassal-parties and particular persons in the top of management of Moldovan state institutions. Vlad Plahotniuc is often called the one and only oligarch left in Moldova, the\u00a0grey eminence<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0the puppeteer<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>of Moldovan politics.
