On October 11th, the European Union announced the decision not to transfer any funds to the budgetary support for justice reforms in Moldova.<\/p>\n

According to the press-release<\/a> of the European External Action Service, the funds made available for reforming the justice system during 2014 and 2015 were inefficiently used:<\/p>\n

“The EU has closely observed the reform process and noted that the Moldovan authorities showed insufficient commitment to reforming the justice sector in 2014 and 2015. With insufficient allocation of funds and personnel, the necessary reforms have not been carried out. As a result, progress has not been sufficient”,\u00a0<\/em>reads the press-release.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Therefore, the EU warns that the last financial transfer for the reform programme, which amounts to 28 million euros, would not be transferred to the Government of Moldova. The Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova, Ambassador Peter Michalko, underlined that the EU would continue supporting Moldovans in their work for a better future, but it wants\u00a0to give priority to projects that directly improve the lives of Moldovans.<\/em><\/p>\n

Moreover, payments of budget support to Moldova in another four policy areas are also delayed.<\/p>\n

As a reaction to EU’s announcement, Justice Minister Vladimir Cebotari argued<\/a> that the lack of commitment to justice reforms was shown by the authorities in 2014 and 2015- presumably not during his term. In addition, Cebotari claims that the\u00a0lacks were eventually fulfilled in 2016 and 2017.<\/p>\n

Last week, Prime-Minister Pavel Filip declared<\/a> for Reuters that Moldova would not receive the 100 million euros macro-financial assistance in 2017.
