On October 8th, the Parliamentary Assembly of the North-Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) rejected the proposal of the Moldovan delegation to include a provision on the withdrawal of Russian troops from Transnistria in the resolution on Security in the Black Sea area. Participating as an associate state, Moldova requested NATO’s support in requesting the full withdrawal of Russian troops from its eastern region.<\/p>\n

The Liberal MP and leader Mihai Ghimpu, who was present, stated that the main argument against the proposal was that Moldova is not a Black Sea\u00a0state:<\/p>\n

” The argument was that we do not have direct access to the Black Sea. We will come back to this problem, next year. Next year, other countries than the Black Sea ones will be (discussed)”,\u00a0<\/em>said Ghimpu, quoted by Digi24<\/a>.<\/p>\n

According to Radio Free Europe<\/a>, the resolution instead included an amendment of the Romanian delegation which states that any solution in the Transnistrian conflict settlement must respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Moldova. The resolution is expected to be adopted on October 9th.<\/p>\n

The Republic of Moldova\u00a0addressed the United Nations<\/a>\u00a0with the request to include the issue of the withdrawal of the Russian peacekeeping forces from Transnistria to the agenda of the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly. In a letter from the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Moldova to the UN, Victor Moraru stated that the presence of Russian troops\u00a0\u201cconstitutes a danger to the maintenance of international peace and security.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0The subject is due to be discussed in the plenary session of the UN General Assembly on 23 October.<\/p>\n

Note:<\/strong>\u00a0Besides the 402 so-called peacekeepers, Russia holds the Operative Group of the Russian Forces in the Transnistrian region of Moldova containing approximately 1200 regular soldiers, mainly recruited among locals.
