On September 24th, the Party of Socialists of Moldova (PSRM) organized protests in the cities of B\u0103l\u021bi and Cahul and the town of Anenii Noi. The Socialists and their supporters rallied in support of the President Igor Dodon, who previously announced a referendum<\/a> to empower himself, but was stopped by the Government.<\/p>\n

Moreover, the Socialists announced that they would start a campaign of collecting signatures to support a Republic with more powers for the president:<\/p>\n

“The national referendum proposed by the President Igor Dodon will be organized anyway. Starting from today, 24 September 2017, the Party of Socialists announce the start of the national campaign of collecting signatures in the support of switching to the presidential governing form and attributing executive power to the chief of the state in the Republic of Moldova. Our objective is to collect at least 70% of the signatures of citizens with the right to vote”<\/em>, explains PSRM, quoted by TV8<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Socialists even threatened to convene in the Great National Assembly Square for a so-called “Great National Assembly” in the case of attempts to dismiss the President or forceful settlement of the Transnistrian conflict\u00a0<\/em>for\u00a0a definite salvation of the country from an antipopular and anti-state regime.<\/em><\/p>\n

On March 28th, Igor Dodon\u00a0came up<\/a>\u00a0with an idea of a consultative referendum on issues of \u201cnational importance\u201d. The national referendum planned for 24 September 2017 will have four topics of debate:<\/p>\n

  1. \u201cDo you support canceling the\u00a0Law of the Billion?<\/a>\u201c<\/li>\n
  2. \u201cDo you support giving to the President of Moldova additional rights to dissolve the Parliament and (call for) preliminary Parliamentary elections?\u201d<\/li>\n
  3. \u201cDo you support reducing the number of deputies from 101 to 71?\u201d<\/li>\n
  4. \u201cDo you support the studying of \u201cHistory of Moldova\u201d in educational institutions?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The initiative is seen by analysts as a tool to increase the powers of the President in the Parliamentary Republic, but also as pre-condition for increasing the popularity of the Socialists\u2019 Party before the 2018 elections.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
