The Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs reacted with “regret” and “dismay” to the recent statement adopted<\/a> by the Russian State Duma on the so-called “negative tendency of the situation around Transnistria”, suggesting a blockade organized by Ukraine and Moldova.<\/p>\n

In a press-release issued by Moldova MFA, the statement of the Duma is seen as having a series of “tendentious evaluations” and “absolutely unfounded critiques”, meant to confuse the public opinion and provoke new tensions. In exchange, the Moldovan authorities explain that the Republic of Moldova demonstrated enough political will within the 5+2 negotiations of the Transnistrian conflict settlement. Several confidence building measures such as facilitating trade, creating conditions for accepting Transnistria-registered cars in the international traffic, recognizing diplomas from the left bank and the reestablishment of the telephone connections, as well as elimination of all obstacles of free movement of people are mentioned as premises for solving the conflict. The Moldovan authorities also suggest that the leaders from Tiraspol are those to be blamed for manifesting a “non-constructive position” at the negotiations table.<\/p>\n

Speaking of the criticism brought to Moldova’s intention to replace the peacekeeping operation in Transnistria, the Moldovan MFA underlines that the accusations are nothing but a “dictate towards a sovereign state like the Republic of Moldova”:<\/p>\n

“Thus, challenging the legitimate right of the Republic of Moldova to pledge for the transformation of the current peacekeeping operation in a civil mission with international mandate, as well as to demand the withdrawal of the illegally deployed troops on its territory, is regrettable”<\/em>, reads the press-release<\/a> of Moldova’s MFA.<\/p>\n

In this end, the Moldovan authorities ask the Russian Federation, as one of the most important actors in the 5+2 negotiations format, to play a constructive role in the conflict settlement.<\/p>\n

The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also issued a declaration of dismay to the statement adopted by the Russian Duma. Thus, the Ukrainians reject any “unfounded” accusations brought by the Duma on the so-called “blockade” of the Transnistrian region of Moldova, reports UNN<\/a>. To the opposite, the Ukrainian MFA brings up the argument that there is no such blockade: Transnistria actually benefited from all opportunities of the CIS trade area and the DCFTA between Moldova and the EU and increased its trade with Ukraine.<\/p>\n

Ukraine’s MFA also argues that Russian Duma contradicts the official position of Russia when it condemns the joint border control put up at Cuciurgan, even if it recognizes the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Moldova. Regarding the 5+2 negotiations and their supposed “delay”, Ukraine reminds that the very Transnistrian delegation rejected the plan to organize another round of talks in Bavaria. And again, it reminded Russia of its OSCE commitment dating back to 1999 to withdraw the troops from Transnistria.<\/p>\n
