Moldovan President Igor Dodon reacted<\/a> to the letter of the 25 MEPs who ask the Moldovan authorities to withdraw the draft law on the mixed electoral law and instead improve current system.<\/p>\n

In a Facebook post, Dodon says that he counts only on the opinion of the citizens and the internal policy objectives:<\/em><\/p>\n

“The external pressures are counterproductive and do not affect us in any way”<\/em>, writes Dodon, stressing that he and the Socialist caucus will keep their firm position on the mixed system.<\/p>\n

Moreover, Dodon is warning that, in case the draft doesn’t get through the 2nd lecture, his party would win in the 2018 Parliamentary elections within the proportional system and replace it for the next elections.<\/p>\n

On June 26th, 25 members of the European Parliament asked<\/a> in a letter the authorities of Moldova to take into consideration the recommendations of the Venice Commission<\/a> and to withdraw the draft law on the mixed electoral system.\u00a0The MEPs warned about the significant problems of the mixed system raised by the Venice Commission, but also about the lack of proper consultation with the opposition and the civil society. According to them, the non-transparent manner of adoption of the new electoral law makes them believe\u00a0\u201csuch change is made to benefit a few, not the people of Moldova\u201d<\/em>,\u00a0with a possibility of weakening the trust in the election process. Instead, they propose to Moldovan authorities to solve real problems:\u00a0fighting the big corruption, investigating the banking sector fraud and recovering the stolen money, reforming the justice sector, providing for the freedom of press, ensuring the respect of human rights, improving the business environment to create jobs at home and increase people\u2019s incomes.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
