On June 14th, the Court of Buiucani (Chi\u0219in\u0103u) decided to issue a warrant of 30 preventive arrest for the former Prosecutor General of Moldova, Vaelriu Balaban.<\/p>\n

Balaban and six other persons were arrested on June 12th by anti-corruption prosecutors in a case of power abuse. According to the prosecutors<\/a>, Balaban adopted a decision to buy an overpriced building for the Prosecution’s Office and to contract a reconstruction company with huge violations of law.<\/p>\n

In 2005, the former Prosecutor General ordered the acquisition of an unfinished building from 100 Alexandru cel Bun street for 9 million lei, even if the evaluation was estimated at 2,5 million lei. The acquisition took place without any public listing or any authorized project document. Later, Balaban contracted an economic agent for the reconstruction works, which are not finished until now.<\/p>\n

18,8 million lei were spent from the state budget and more 6 million lei are still requested by the economic agent for some presumed works.<\/p>\n

Balaban and other suspects risk imprisonment for up to 10 years with the ban to occupy public positions for 10 to 15 years.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
