The European Parliament delayed the payment of the financial assistance to Moldova, after several political groups expressed their concerns with the political evolutions in the country, reports Radio Free Europe<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It was reportedly scheduled on May 18th for the Commission, Council and Parliament representatives to discuss the details of the financial assistance plan. According to Lithuanian MEP Petras Austrevicius, the discussions were delayed on May 16th for at least a month because of concerns related to the situation of the media in Moldova, the rule of law and the recently proposed changes to the electoral system.<\/p>\n

Free Europe correspondents report that several deputies of the Moldovan Democratic Party visited the European Parliament on Tuesday attempting to convince the EPP and ALDE groups to renounce from the decision to delay the assistance to Moldova.<\/p>\n

The main condition put by the latter\u00a0was for the Moldovan governing coalition to ensure<\/a> a fully democratic change of the electoral system, with a full consensus of all political forces.<\/p>\n

The electoral system change in question was provoked by the Democrats (still insist\u00a0an uninominal system<\/a>) and Socialists, who voted together for the adoption of a mixed electoral system<\/a>\u00a0(initiated by President Igor Dodon) with 74 votes out of total 101.<\/p>\n
