In reaction to the proposal of the President Igor Dodon<\/a> and his fellow Socialists<\/a> to introduce a mixed electoral system in Moldova, the leader of the Democratic Party, Vlad Plahotniuc, writes\u00a0in a blogpost<\/a> that the initiative is a “political fiction”.<\/p>\n

The oligarch claims that the Socialists violate their promise to reform the political class by refusing to change\u00a0the essence of forming the Parliament,\u00a0<\/em>by switching from forming it through internal party agreements to a transparent process of transforming the deputies in real electees of the people.<\/em>\u00a0Plahotniuc rhetorically himself why Dodon wanted the direct election of the President (the way he was elected in this position) and why he doesn’t want the direct election of deputies.<\/p>\n

“…Because the declarations of the Socialists that they would be ready for the change of the political class is a fiction. Their declaration regarding the necessity of respecting the will of the people- they treat it as a fiction too, which they use only it coincides \u00a0with the interests of PSRM and when they want to play with, for a lot of times, the geopolitical vector”<\/em>, says Plahotniuc.<\/p>\n

According to the Democrat chairman, PDM (Democratic Party of Moldova) will continue to promote the uninominal vote (majoritarian, single-member constituency system). Moreover, they would continue if the Socialists warn with a boycott of the future Parliamentary elections.<\/p>\n

“This is not the worst thing, I would take it to the chapter on the advantages of introducing the uninominal vote system”<\/em>, ends the grey eminence of the Moldovan politics.<\/p>\n

Plahotniuc might be forgetting\u00a0that he himself was a big promoter of the mixed electoral system back in 2013, when a draft law<\/a> on that had been\u00a0submitted to the Parliament, but later retreated because of critique from the Council of Europe<\/a>. He even praised the mixed system in a blogpost<\/a>, which is now deleted and can be found only in pieces<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Note:<\/em> Although Dodon asked\u00a0the governing coalition, ruled by\u00a0the Democrats, to withdraw their draft on\u00a0the majoritarian system<\/a>, some regard his\u00a0proposal just as a long-awaited compromise made with the Democratic Party.
