On April 20th, the judges of the Chi\u0219in\u0103u Court condemned businessman Veaceslav Platon (Kobalev in Ukraine) to 18 years of imprisonment for frauds and money laundering huge proportions, reports Anticorup\u021bie.md<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Platon was present in the court room when the sentence was pronounced, but was taken out during the last word.<\/p>\n

“It is not a sentence for me, but for the entire Moldova. Plahotniuc’s circus!”,\u00a0<\/em>Platon managed to say when leaving the court.<\/p>\n

The sentence includes the ban to occupy any positions in the banking sector for 5 years and the confiscation of more than 869 million lei (almost 45 million USD) out of the value of Platon’s goods and properties.<\/p>\n

The motivated sentence will be made public on May 15th.<\/p>\n

Veaceslav Platon was accused of benefiting from high risk loans from the former Banca de Economii in value of 800 million lei: 130 million lei, 12 million USD and 5 million euros. He was arrested<\/a> by the SBU of Ukraine on July 25th.\u00a0Businessman Veaceslav Platon was extradited from Ukraine to Moldova on August 29th 2016 with a charter flight, for which the Moldovan Interior Ministry claimed to have paid only 1690 US dollars. Some say that the half-legal<\/a> extradition was personally ordered by the Democrat leader and oligarch Vlad Plahotniuc. Anticorup\u021bie found that the charter flight used for the extradition costed around 15 thousand US dollars<\/a>.<\/p>\n

During his preventive detention, Platon\u2019s lawyers complained<\/a> about severe violations in the trial and the detention of the businessman like beating, camera surveillance in the cell and separation from the trial until the sentence.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
