In a recent interview for Newsmaker.md<\/a>, the Prosecutor General of Moldova, Eduard Harunjen, declared that the businessman, Orhei mayor Ilan Shor is to be pardoned because he wrote a testimony about his bribe to former PM Vlad Filat.<\/p>\n

Harunjen refers to the legislation that offers the possibility to pardon the bribing person, if that person recognized the guilt before the law enforcement institutions found proof of bribe.\u00a0The Prosecutor General implied that the other cases involving\u00a0Banca de Economii ex-chairman will continue.<\/p>\n

Moreover, he stressed that ex-PM Filat was sent to prison<\/a> for “passive corruption and “traffic influence” worth of 80 million USD instead of the reported 250 million, because the prosecutors reportedly had enough proof only for the 80 million. Asked about why Filat’s trials were closed to the public eye, Harunjen motivated that other states have the same practice in regard to the persons that can have “influence on the media”<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Former Liberal-Democrat Prime-Minister, Vlad Filat, was arrested on October 15th 2015 for allegations of passive corruption and traffic influence towards the then businessman and now mayor of Orhei, Ilan Shor. On June 27th 2016<\/a>, he was condemned to nine years of closed imprisonment by the Court Buiucani of Chi\u015fin\u0103u, decision reinforced by the Appeal Court of Chi\u015fin\u0103u on November 11th 2016<\/a>. Recently, the governing majority in the Parliament of Moldova\u00a0deprived<\/a> the imprisoned former Prime-Minister Vlad Filat of his seat in the legislative, decision attacked<\/a> by his fellow Liberal-Democrats at the Constitutional Court. Supreme Court of Justice rejected the request<\/a> to review the case.<\/p>\n

On the other side, Shor is accused<\/a> of obtaining more than 5 billion lei from Banca de Economii in loans, from 4th to 25th of November 2014, the sum being confirmed by the Kroll<\/a> report, and then laundering them through offshore companies. Ilan Shor has been under preventive arrest\u00a0since 22 June 2016.<\/p>\n
