Recently, Moldova’s\u00a0Registry of unique tariffs for medical services was modified<\/a>, thus increasing the prices, sometimes by two, three or even five times.<\/p>\n

Just an example is the stationing in the hospital- one day costed 144 lei before, now it costs 209 lei; one day of stationing in the cardio care section would cost 345 lei instead of 218. A reanimation day would cost 1000 lei instead of 533 lei. Of course, these prices do not include the food and the medicine.<\/p>\n

The Ombudsman of Moldova, Mihail Cotorobai, decided to investigate the justification of the increased prices, taking in account the types of services and the price\/income ratio. Cotorobai thinks that the increase will seriously affect the realization of the right for healthcare, because it would regard\u00a0even the people with medical insurance: some uncovered services would be made more expensive. Moreover, the increase of prices would lead to reducing the access to medical service, thus increasing the risks of morbidity. The Ombudsman warns the authorities that the increase must be conducted in a way it does not dramatically affect the healthcare right.<\/p>\n

On February 23rd, the Party of Socialists organized a protest against the price changes in front of the building of Healthcare Ministry. The Socialists believe that the price increases would represent “a true genocide against the population, that is already under the bottom line of poverty”.<\/p>\n
