The separatist authorities of Transnistria see the American Hummers\u00a0in Moldova as a provocation to the Russian peace-keepers and troops in the region. At least, this is what Oleg Belyakov, the representative of Transnistria in the Joint Control Commission, says about the US donation of 41 HMMWVs and trucks to the Army of Moldova<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In a statement for Nezavisimaya Gazeta<\/a>, Belyakov declares that the situation is a\u00a0provocation, directed against the Russian peace-keepers conducting their mission in the region<\/em>. The hysteria goes further:\u00a0the Romanians would want to conduct together with the Moldovans some military exercises<\/em>. Belyakov says that Romania has recently agreed with Moldova to hold military exercises at Bulboaca training field, a thing hard to believe taking in account President Dodon’s decision to prohibit any joint exercises with the Romanian(-NATO) troops.<\/p>\n

“We are following the movements around the security area. The current Moldovan-Romanian exercises are nothing but a show-off with weapons, directed against the OGRV (Operative Group of Russian Troops) and peace-keepers of Russia. The consolidation of the Romanian and Moldovan armies is taking place and makes the situation in the security area weak. Moreover, it bothers our soldiers and concerns our citizens. We are also concerned about the disagreements between the branches of Moldovan ruling: the President is against the presence of NATO in Moldova, the Romanization of the country and for rapprochement with Transnistria. He also promised that he would not tolerate the deporting of Russian peace-keepers, coming for rotation in Transnistria, which previously happened. Still, the premier and the Parliament speaker hold opposite views. But we still hope that everything will calm down. Joint Control Commission, after a long period of inactivity, finally restarted its normal activity in the trilateral format (Moldova, Transnistria, Russia). This means that the security area is controlled and it is stable”<\/em>, told Belyakov to Nezavisimaya Gazeta.<\/p>\n

On February 15th, the National Army of Moldova received<\/a> a shipment of military vehicles from the Government of the United States of America, based on the agreement of cooperation signed on 21 March 1994. The vehicles are reportedly unarmed.<\/p>\n
