On February 9th, the Government of Moldova announced<\/a> about the progress on the opening of the NATO liaison office.<\/p>\n

The accreditation procedure of the Office is already taking place and the NATO Headquarters found the person leading the Office. Lithuanian Kristina Baleisyte, previously deputy head of the Liaison Office in Georgia, will lead the one in Moldova. The personnel will be civil, because it will be a diplomatic mission.<\/p>\n

The location of the office will soon be found, so that the office is opened in the first half of the second trimester of 2017.<\/p>\n

After his visit to the NATO Headquarters<\/a>, the Moldovan President Igor Dodon reiterated<\/a> his opposition towards the NATO Liaison Office. According to Dodon, the opening of this office would make the relations with the Transnistrian region more difficult. The President declared that he told the officials from Brussels and those from Chi\u0219in\u0103u to not rush with the decision:<\/p>\n

“I consider the opening of the NATO Liaison Office in Chi\u0219in\u0103u to be a mistake. I read the order of the Prime-Minister regarding this Office. I am suggesting to those from Chi\u0219in\u0103u and Brussels: don’t rush. If you open it this year, we will close next year.<\/em><\/p>\n

After the next Parliamentary elections, if you rush with the opening, we will come to the situation that we close the office. Where are you rushing?<\/em>“, said Dodon.<\/p>\n

The civil NATO center have been agreed<\/a> by PM Pavel Filip and NATO Secretary Jens Stoltenberg in November 2016 and would be opened in the spring of 2017 in Chi\u0219in\u0103u.
