In a recent interview for Report.md<\/a>, Romanian member of the European Parliament, Monica Macovei, declared that the European Union would send money to Moldova only\u00a0to contribute to the prosperity of simple citizens.<\/p>\n

Asked about the closing of the opposition Jurnal TV and the recent rise of pressure on investigation journalists, Macovei says that Moldova is not a democracy, but “a beginning of a dictatorship”. <\/em>Accordingly, the first step in that direction would be reducing the voice of the free press, who criticizes the oligarch Plahotniuc.<\/p>\n

“The Democratic Party of Moldova cannot be a partner for the European Union. It led to undermining the critical press and the free journalists through tricks like forcing the owners that rent out spaces to press institutions to cancel the rent contracts. This is, probably, to say that it has nothing to do with Plahotniuc and the Democratic Party. But we know the truth and it is at the surface: (they) want to drown the press that criticizes and monitors the government”,\u00a0<\/em>says Macovei.<\/p>\n

Macovei told Report.md that Brussels did not analyze the draft law on capital liberalization<\/a>, which is, according to the MEP, a total fiscal amnesty that will erode the trust of people, but also the development partners.<\/p>\n

Although officially received well at Brussels, the Government led by Pavel Filip is seen as bad and “undemocratic” by Macovei, who thinks Moldova is not the country with the “little crown from Eastern Europe” like it was 2-3 years ago.<\/p>\n

When speaking about the new pro-Russian President Dodon, the Romanian MEP stressed that he is far from being a partner for the EU, as long as he wants to cancel the Association Agreement. In this regard, the prospects are far from optimistic.<\/p>\n

Macovei says that the European officials see that the reforms are being simulated in Moldova, but still refrain from intervening, because it\u00a0“is an independent country”.<\/p>\n
