On January 20th, the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia autonomy elected its sixth president- Alexandr Tarnavsky. The new speaker was elected by 28 out of 31 local deputies who voted.<\/p>\n

Until recently, Tarnavsky held the position of vice-President of People’s Assembly. Belonging to the Democratic Party camp, the new speaker declared he would neglect the local political rivaly in order to pay attention to the economic development of the region and to build a constructive dialogue with the authorities from Chi\u0219in\u0103u, reports IPN.md<\/a>.<\/p>\n

According to Moldnova<\/a>, Tarnavsky was the only candidate for the speaker seat, because the close ally of Bashkan Irina Vlah, Dmitri Konstantinov, would have been eliminated from the race for presumed electoral frauds<\/a>. The Gagauz Socialist block had to cede positions to the Democrats, satisfying themselves with the seat of vice-speaker held by Alexandru Sukhodolsky. Therefore, Gagauzia has a similar political situation as that of the Republic: the legislative power is held by the Democrats, while the Presidency (Bashkan) is held by the Socialists.<\/p>\n

The 35 deputies of the People\u2019s Assembly of Gagauzia are elected for mandates of four years through uni-nominal circumscriptions. A deputy is reportedly representing 5000 voters and a locality.<\/p>\n
