Vladimir Botnari, former chief policeman of Chi\u0219in\u0103u, previously judged for negligence during the 7 April 2009 revolts, asks prosecutors to bring to justice the journalist of Center for Journalistic Investigations, Mariana Ra\u021b\u0103.<\/p>\n

Botnari submitted a complaint\u00a0to the Prosecution Office of Chi\u0219in\u0103u, invoking that the journalist accessed and distributed, without his consent, personal data regarding him and members of his family, reports Anticorup\u021bie.md<\/a>. Moreover, the former policeman asks to prosecute everyone that accessed and distributed his personal data starting from October 2009 until now.<\/p>\n

According to Botnari, the investigative journalist “accessed and published personal data, as well as information about personal life of Botnari family, including data regarding the properties of the daughter”. The information would be found in the article published by Ra\u021b\u0103<\/a> on Botnari (a policeman) getting a manager job at Moldtelecom, the national telecommunication company. The complaint also regards another investigation of Ziarul de Gard\u0103<\/a> on Botnari’s real estate, including a villa outside Chi\u0219in\u0103u and an expensive house in the Moldovan capital, registered on the name of his daughter just one week before 7 April 2009.<\/p>\n

The request of Botnari was registered on 27 December 2016 and the journalist Mariana Ra\u021b\u0103 was inquired by a prosecutor just several days ago. 27 January is the deadline for the prosecutor to decide on starting or not a case against Ra\u021b\u0103 or any other journalists, “responsible of accessing and publishing personal data of Vladimir Botnari, Maria Botnari and Diana Alexa-Botnari”<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Six journalistic associations and organizations reacted<\/a> to Botnari’s request and demand\u00a0the prosecutors in a statement to reject it, since it is a sign of intimidation of journalists, incompatible with norms of lawful state.<\/p>\n

Amnesty International Moldova also qualified<\/a> the inquiry of Botnari as a “police practice” of penal attacks on investigative journalists. Moreover, Amnesty asks Botnari personally and other officials to not use the personal data and the Center for Personal Data Protection in a tool of fight against the press.<\/p>\n

Former chief policeman, who previously held various high\u00a0positions between 2002 and 2009, was judged together with the former Interior Minister Gheorghe Papuc for negligence at service during the revolts in April 2009, resulted in the death of Valeriu Boboc beaten by a policeman. On 30 June 2015<\/a>, Botnari was acquitted by the Supreme Court of Justice, saving him from suspended two years of detention\u00a0and Papuc from 4 years of imprisonment.
