“If we lose the Russian peace-keepers on the banks of Nistru, we might transform Moldova and Transnistria in a hot spot”<\/em>, declared the leader of the breakaway Pridnestrovian Moldovan Republic (PMR), Vadim Krasnoselski, when meeting the first deputies of the separatist republic on January 12th.<\/p>\n

Krasnoselski informed the first deputies, aka founding fathers of PMR, about the results of the talks with the Moldova President Igor Dodon from January 4th<\/a>. He stressed that the talks had an informative intention and no political issues were discussed:<\/p>\n

“The main principle in this meeting was in the fact that I saw no need to talk on political questions. Because we have an established status- the independence of PMR. I am deeply convinced in that the guarantee of our security is our independence. Only in independence we can defend our legal interests in the uneasy geopolitical situation, that surrounds Transnistria”<\/em>, said\u00a0the so-called president, quoted by novostipmr.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Krasnoselski stressed that he had a common point with Dodon- the need for keeping the format of the peace-keeping operations:<\/p>\n

“I saw understanding from the behalf of the Moldovan President, who also understands that the format needs no change and that all these statements of politicians about the green corridor, and so on, are unfounded and disturbing. I was telling that, if we lose\u00a0the Russian peace-keepers on the banks of Nistru, we might transform Moldova and Transnistria in a hot spot”<\/em>, added he.<\/p>\n

Later, Krasnoselski requested<\/a>\u00a0the so-called Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Transnistria to convince the Moldovan part to reinitialize the works of the Joint\u00a0Control Commission, but also to prepare a plan of celebrating 25 years from the establishment of the Russian peace-keeping mission in Transnistria.<\/p>\n

The peace-keeping mission in the buffer zone is maintained by 402 Russian troops, 492 Transnistrian soldiers, 355 Moldovan ones and 10 Ukrainian military observers at 15 checkpoints. It was actually founded on July 21st 1994, when the Moldovan President Mircea Snegur and the Russian President Boris Yeltsin signed a agreement in accordance to the conditions of the ceasefire in Transnistria. The actual deployment of Russian troops in the region dates to 29 July 1992, when the separatist forces in eastern Moldova, backed by the 14th Army of General Lebed, clashed with the constitutional authorities and conducted a war between March and July that year.<\/p>\n
