On January 4th, President of Moldova, Igor Dodon, had a formal meeting with the so-called president of Transnistria, Vadim Krasnoselski, in the separatist-controlled city of Bender. The meeting of leaders from both banks of Nistru river is the first in the last 9 years, the previous one taking place in 2008 between then-President Vladimir Voronin and Transnistrian Igor Smirnov.<\/p>\n

Igor Dodon congratulated Krasnoselski with the election in Transnistria, mentioning that he is the first Moldovan President to ever congratulate any Transnistrian leader.<\/p>\n

Dodon stressed that, “having the support and trust of the people, manifested in the last elections on both banks of Nistru”, there are premises for managing joint activities meant for normalizing the relations. According to Dodon, they discussed issues regarding the recognition of “diplomas, number plates, agricultural works in Dub\u0103sari district, Moldovan schools, communication and facilitation of people movement between the two banks of Nistru”<\/em>. Krasnoselski and Dodon reportedly agreed to elaborate a package of solutions for these issues and discuss them at the earliest meeting.<\/p>\n

“Most importantly, we established a good contact, there is openness and a declared readiness for compromises from both sides”,\u00a0<\/em>emphasized Dodon.<\/p>\n

According to novostipmr.com<\/a>, Vadim Krasnoselski, in his turn, declared that the rhetoric of the Moldovan authorities changed, since Igor Dodon acknowledges that the presence of the Russian peace-keepers is a guarantee for security and for preventing\u00a0Transnistria and Moldova to become a hot point.<\/p>\n

Krasnoselski and Dodon later visited the Alexandr Nevski Cathedral and the Bender Fortress.<\/p>\n

From the photos he posted on his Facebook page, one can see that President Dodon also paid a visit to the Russian peace-keepers in the bordering zone.<\/p>\n
