Over 10 thousand Moldovans signed a petition<\/a> to ask the Moldovan authorities to change the taxation laws so that the Orthodox Church pays taxes, as long as it is involved in politics.<\/p>\n

The signatories are concerned about the involvement of the Moldovan Orthodox Church in the current Presidential campaign, because the law states that the religious organizations are civil organizations. The people were worried by the endorsement of the mitropolit Vladimir<\/a> and a group of priests from B\u0103l\u021bi Episcopacy<\/a> for the socialist candidate Igor Dodon, and the detrimental discourse oriented towards the other candidate, Maia Sandu.<\/p>\n

“We consider that the open involvement of the Orthodox Church in political life is intolerable. Once this institution evidently violates the law, the state must apply all the legal means to treat this religious cult as every other economic agent that earns an income, but doesn’t pay income taxes, thus violating the rights of the people towards whom it commits illegalities”<\/em>, reads the text of the petition addressed to the Justice Ministry, Fiscal Inspectorate, Work Inspectorate, General Prosecution Office of Moldova.<\/p>\n

The Moldovan Orthodox Church later came with a reaction on the petition for Radio Free Europe<\/a>. Vadim Cheiba\u0219, the secretary of Moldova Mitropoly, that the “humiliating observations launched by B\u0103l\u021bi and F\u0103le\u0219ti Episcopate” does not reflect the opinion of Church, and that the request for taxation of the Church is unjustified.<\/p>\n

Asked about the appearances of the mitropolit Vladimir next to Igor Dodon in the electoral campaign, the Church secretary claimed:
\n“Mitropolit Vladimir did not appear next to any of the candidates. He did not do anything but salute a known person.”<\/em><\/p>\n
