Transnistria is categorically against the withdrawal of Russian military forces from the region, declared the separatist leader Evgeny Shevchuk for TASS<\/a>, commenting the media reports<\/a> that Moldova and Ukraine agreed to make a plan to make a corridor for the Russian troops to leave.<\/p>\n

“The Russian group of forces which is playing a key role in the peacekeeping operation on the Dniester banks is a unique example of a peacekeeping mission, which fact is recognized by many experts worldwide. This operation is a guarantee of peace and stability in Transnistria”<\/em>, stated Shevchuk.<\/p>\n

Shevchuk doesn’t endorse the withdrawal until a peace agreement between the constitutional authorities of Moldova and the administration of Transnistria is concluded: “We think that until a final political solution to the conflict is reached, there is no sense in withdrawing the Russian group of forces because it may aggravate the situation and trigger more bloodshed.”<\/em> Moreover, the separatist leader does not support the initiative of “a number of Moldovan politicians” to replace Russian peace-keepers by civil observers, to “unfreeze” the conflict the conflict and even involve NATO forces into its settlement. In this way, Shevchuk might have referred to the statement of Moldova’s Defense Minister Anatol \u0218alaru at the latest NATO Summit in Warsaw on replacing the military peace-keeping mission with a civil international one composed of joint forces of the UN<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Transnistrian leader added that the idea of a civil observer mission on the banks of Nistru river had once been introduced in 1992, but failed after the “mission fled Bender a couple hours before the shooting began”.<\/p>\n

Shevchuk concludes that Moldova’s “outburst of anti-peacekeeping rhetoric is inadmissible and unconstructive”.<\/p>\n

The peace-keeping mission in the Transnistrian region was established in July 1992 and consists of 402 Russian peacekeepers, 492 Transnistrian and 355 Moldovan servicemen, together with 10 Ukrainian military observers.
