The results of the first round of Presidential elections<\/a> of Moldova mobilized\u00a0the Moldovan diaspora for the second round which will take place on November 13th. The low turnout in voting centers located abroad\u00a0and the big win of the pro-Russian candidate Igor Dodon in the first round pushed Moldovans from all over the world to start caring about their vote for the future President.<\/p>\n

Created on November 1st, the group “Adopt a vote”<\/a> managed to gather over 25 thousand members of the Moldovan community living abroad who want to share rides to the few voting centers or to offer\/ask accommodation on November 13th. The Moldovans are discussing the possibilities to gather together to go to voting centers and the opportunities of hosting each other in cities with polling stations. Some of them even offer themselves as drivers, their cars and full fuel tanks to give rides to\u00a0those who live too far from voting centers.<\/p>\n

“Dear Moldovans, I am in Frankfurt and I know that there are a lot of you that do not have the possibility to come to voting because of the work or the money. Write me, please, and I will try to help you. I can come take you with my car if you are in the range of 100 km or I can buy you a train ticket. Your vote is very important”,\u00a0<\/em>reads a post<\/a> in the group.<\/p>\n

“Hi, I offer accommodation for 2 people and free transportation from Brossard to Montreal for those who are interested to vote on November 13th. Plus a nice brunch at one restaurant from Dix-30. So, let’s go to vote!”<\/em>, reads another<\/a> message.<\/p>\n

“Hi. I can adopt 2 or probably 3 votes in Prague. You can come with kids if you have a family. You have where to stay during the night. If you don’t know anyone to meet you at the train station or anywhere, let me know and specify”, <\/em>writes Florin<\/a> from Prague.<\/em><\/p>\n

“UAE that go to Doha to vote! We can adopt votes from distance. If you have a flight on 12th from UAE, we can help with transportation from the airport, accommodation (3 bedrooms, so calculate how many you can fit in) and transportation to the voting center on 13th morning”, <\/em>suggests Nelly<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>in the group.<\/p>\n

Iurie, a Moldovan citizen living in the Chinese city Wuhan from Hubei province said he would\u00a0travel 1200 kilometers to the Moldovan Embassy to Beijing just to vote on November 13th.<\/p>\n

“I feel obliged to participate at these elections because
\nthis might be our last chance. The reason for this is that I want to found a family at home, and not be adopted by a country”<\/em>, explains Iurie, who studies\u00a0International Law in China.<\/p>\n\n

Another Moldovan, Vlad Iurasco, says<\/a> he would travel 1110 kilometers with other 60 Moldovans from Calgary, Canada to Seattle, USA only to vote:<\/p>\n

“I am from Chi\u0219in\u0103u, living now in Calgary, left Moldova 11 years ago and going to vote at Seattle with 60 more Moldovans. We will go 1110 kilometers one way from Canada to the USA to vote for Maia Sandu. We are finally electing a leader of integrity. Maia Sandu, we are with you”, <\/em>says Vlad in his supportive message for Action and Solidarity Party candidate Sandu.<\/p>\n

The platform was also the point where several Moldovans wrote a petition to open more voting centers, but also a letter to ask for ticket discounts from transportation companies such as RyanAir<\/a>.<\/p>\n

A group of 50 Moldovan students from Denmark even started a fundraising campaign<\/a> to afford renting a bus for all of them to go to the closest voting station in Berlin, Germany.
\n\"\"“On Sunday, November 13th, the destiny of a whole country could be changed. It is possible to bring a new breath in the life of a generation”<\/em>, students motivate their decision to have a long journey just to vote.<\/p>\n\n\n

In this sense, the Government of Romania took the decision to make the train tickets free for Moldovan students in the day of Moldovan Presidential elections.<\/p>\n

The Moldovan Government opened 100 voting centers abroad<\/a>, insufficient for Moldovan diaspora communities from the United Kingdom and France. The number of voting bulletins was increased from 2000 to 3000 by the Electoral Commission only in 10 centers<\/a> located abroad.

That is why the members of the Moldovan diaspora advise each other to choose less popular voting centers in order to avoid running out of ballots, like it happened at the voting center in London\/Stratford in the first round of Presidential elections on October 30th. They even made a map<\/a> of the most and least used voting centers in the first round.<\/p>\n

According to the\u00a0results<\/a> from polling stations outside Moldova, 76,30% of Moldovans voted for Maia Sandu and 11,01% for Igor Dodon. The general results<\/a> in the first round of the Presidential elections were quite different: 38,71% voted for Sandu and 47,98% for Dodon.<\/p>\n

Most of the Moldovans living abroad and especially, in Western countries, are concerned about the high possibility of the pro-Russian, Socialist\u00a0candidate Igor Dodon winning the presidential seat over the pro-European, progressive\u00a0Maia Sandu.<\/p>\n

Igor Dodon<\/a> represents the Socialists’ Party of Moldova, supports closer relations to the Russian Federation, promotes Christian-Orthodox values, opposes LGBT equality and non-discrimination rights. Previously Minister of Economy during the Communist regime after 2005, Dodon now claims to be an anti-oligarchic candidate, despite evidence of links with Democrat oligarch Plahotniuc.<\/p>\n

Maia Sandu<\/a>, represents the recently founded Action and Solidarity Party, supports the continuation of the European Integration process for Moldova and promotes the anti-corruption fight together with the strengthening of the national education system. Former Education Minister, she\u00a0was now chosen as joint Presidential candidate of the center-right parties and even got a superficial endorsement by Plahotniuc himself, the latter being the main target for Sandu’s attacks.<\/p>\n

The Republic of Moldova is now holding its first Presidential elections in the last 20 years, after the Constitutional Court canceled<\/a> an amendment from year 2000 in March 2016. The Republic of Moldova is a Parliamentary republic, where the President has limited executive power related to appointing representatives of the justice and prosecution systems, to addressing the Parliament on the problems of the nation and to guarding the national security.<\/p>\n
