The President of the Republic of Moldova, Nicolae Timofti, refused to attend the meeting of the Council of heads of states of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). The President announced Moldova would be represented by the Prime-Minister Pavel Filip at Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. <\/p>\n

According to a press-release<\/a> of the Presidency, President Timofti “knowing that the agenda of the summit of Commonwealth of Independent States is based on the economy, considered that Moldova, being a member of only the economical part of the CIS, can be represented by the chief of the Government from Chi\u0219in\u0103u, Pavel Filip”. <\/p>\n

The press service<\/a> of the Government mentions, in its turn, that Filip will have a series of bilateral meetings with the heads of member-states, in order to seek for “possibilities of deepening the diplomatic relations, including the commercial-economical ones”. <\/p>\n

The Republic of Moldova joined the CIS in 1991. The Commonwealth incorporates 11 ex-Soviet countries, out of which Ukraine and Turkmenistan are associate members. Georgia withdrew its membership in 2008, while Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania never signed the treaty.
