On August 31st, the race of the Presidential elections started in Moldova with six parties launching their candidates. In order to register the candidate in the electoral list, the party or the candidate himself has to ask the Central Electoral Commission<\/a> for the registration of the initiative group of 25 to 100 people who are supposed to collect 15 000 signatures from at least of the districts of the Republic until the end of September.<\/p>\n

“Our Party” led by B\u0103l\u021bi mayor Renato Usat\u00eei proposed the journalist Dumitru Chubashenko<\/a> as Presidential candidate. Chubashenko declared for the press that his first action as President, if elected, would be to dissolve the current Parliament, then to appoint a Government that “would wipe away the legacy of Plahotniuc’s regime”.

The political Platform “Dignity and Truth” registered the initiative group for supporting Andrei N\u0103stase for Presidentials. According to press-release of the Platform, the Presidential elections aren’t enough for “demolishing the mafia-type oligarchy”, but are important, followed by causing snap Parliamentary elections.

The Liberal Party, surprisingly or not, proposed the candidacy of their leader Mihai Ghimpu for registration. Ghimpu motivated that he wants the position of Presidency, because he would do more things than his counter candidates with “mercantile, group interests”, promising to be Moldova’s first right-wing President and to continue the battle for Reunion with Romania.

Outside the building of the President’s residence, the Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) proposed the candidacy of Maia Sandu, former Education Minister and World Bank consultant. Sandu, the only female candidate, called on people to “start cleaning the political class and regain the independence” from the Presidential institution, stressing that her first tasks as a President would be to declare corruption a national emergency and to promote people based on their merits and performance.

Former PM Iurie Leanc\u0103 was proposed for Presidency by the European People’s Party. Leanc\u0103 motivated his intention by suggesting the continuation of the European path, culminating in 2018 with an EU membership application, mentioning that the visa liberalized regime and the Association Agreement with the EU as his personal achievements.

The Socialists’ Party of Moldova proposed its leader Igor Dodon for the Presidency. Dodon insisted on three principles in his announcement, statehood, neutrality and Moldovan identity, promising that he would fight for consolidating and reintegrating the country, against unionism and for the Moldovan identity, Orthodox values and good relations with the Russian Federation.

The Democratic Party announced in the evening their Presidential candidate, Marian Lupu, former Parliament speaker. The National Council of the Democrats stated that Lupu is a person with experience, a balanced person placed in the centre of the political spectrum, even with chances to succed in the second tour.<\/p>\n

Oleg Brega<\/a>, an independent civil rights activist, was denied from registering his candidacy for lacking an initiative group. Brega announced he would form one in order to exercite his right to be a candidate for the Presidency of Moldova.
