The study was prepared in collaboration with the Office of United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and the United Nations Development Program with the financial support of the Norwegian Government. <\/p>\n<p>The study conducted in 2015 aimed at measuring the social distance between the respondents and the vulnerable and marginalized groups, and to confirm the existing stereotypes regarding latter. The focus was on examining the attitudes and the perceptions of the population regarding such people as: persons with mental and intellectual impairments, persons with physical impairments, LGBT persons, people living HIV, Roma people, Russians living in Moldova, Russian-speaking persons, Romanians living in Moldova, Jewish people, Persons of African origin, foreigners living in Moldova without holding its citizenship, persons of muslim religion, other religious minorities, ex-detainees and the last, but not least, women.<\/p>\n<p>The Social Distance Index measured the acceptance of certain people on the following scale: 0-Family member, 1-Friend, 2-Neighbor, 3-Work colleague, 4-Moldova citizen, 5-Visitor of Moldova, 6-Exclusion from Moldova. The least accepted groups were the LGBT persons with 5,2 points, people living with HIV- 4,3, ex-detainees and people with mental disabilities- 3,6 each, persons of muslim religion- 3,3, persons of African origin and Roma people- 3,1 each. The most accepted groups occurred to be, from a bigger to a lesser extent: the Russian speaking people and the Russians living in Moldova (0,9), then Romanians living in Moldova (1,6), persons with physical disabilities (2,2), Jewish people, foreigners living in Moldova without citizenship and other religious groups (2,3 each). The average value of the social distance proved to be 2,8- between Neighbor and Work colleague. <\/p>\n<p>The most rejected groups, LGBT persons, ex-detainees and persons with mental disabilities, were considered the most dangerous for the security by the respondents.<\/p>\n<p>The high intolerance of Moldovans is motivated by several fears:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The participants from both focus groups would not like to have as neighbors persons with mental impairments. The young reject the ex-detainees, and the persons over 30 years old are more concerned with the &#8220;possible influence&#8221; of the LGBT group over children.
