On August 11th, the exchange rate between the Transnistrian ruble and the US dollar increased up to 14-14,5 rubles\/USD at some exchange offices in the separatist republic. On the next day, the commercial banks of the region did the same thing, showing increased exchange rates. <\/p>\n

The Transnistrian republican bank, the monetary regulator of the separatist region, announced that the banks and the exchange offices have the right to adjust the rates for foreign currencies in accordance to the real situation on the monetary market. <\/p>\n

According to the deputy chief of the central bank, Alexandr Leanca, the exchange rate set between 11,10 and 11,30 local rubles per US dollar caused a deficit of US dollars and therefore, caused the formation of a “black monetary market”. The latter was providing foreign currency at its real exchange rate, while huge lines were formed at the banks and the exchange offices, where the foreign currency was lacking.<\/p>\n

Now that the commercial exchange rate was raised, the experts from the region fear the rise of the prices for consumer goods. Leanca doesn’t think so and stressed that the prices already contain the changes in the rates. <\/p>\n

On August 15th, the banking authority of the separatist republic set the 5% limit of the difference between the selling and buying exchange rates, but also obliged the commercial banks to use the previous exchange rate for earlier loans in US dollars.<\/p>\n

The foreign currency is mostly used in Transnistria by people who go shopping in Ukraine or Moldova, where the separatist ruble has no value.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
