Chinese and Moldovan officials agreed to complete a feasibility study on \u201claunching new projects for producing electricity in Moldova\u201d by the end of 2016. Officially, the NNPC wants to invest in \u201crenewable energy, wind, solar, etc.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the director of the Moldovan Academy of Sciences&#8217; Energy Institute, Mihai T\u00e2r\u0219u, Chinese were focused on nuclear energy rather than on wind and solar energy investment. T\u00e2r\u0219u told that NNPC would be willing to pay for the feasibility study, the operation of the plant and the construction. <\/p>\n<p>T\u00e2r\u0219u reportedly advised against a nuclear power plant because of the environmental risks, plus Moldova\u2019s lack of water resources, facilities for storing radioactive waste, and \u201cqualified and experienced staff in this field.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Accordingly, there is another risk, that related to Moldova&#8217;s role as a hub for trafficking of nuclear materials, which involves &#8220;Russian criminal ties and anti-Western customers&#8221;. <\/p>\n<p>Denis Cenu\u0219\u0103, an economic analyst from Expert-Grup, thinks that China&#8217;s interest in Moldova is part of a long-term strategy: <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Chinese state companies \u2026 are always interested in reaching new markets where they can export their products and technology, including for renewable energy.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Local media and Moldova\u2019s few environmental activists paid little attention to the NNPC visit.<br \/>\nEnergy expert T\u00e2r\u0219u does not believe that a nuclear power plant will be built in Moldova.
