How did you perceive Information and Communication Technologies before involving in GirlsGoIT?

Since a little kid, I had a special relationship with technology. However, before GirlsGoIT I have never thought of making a career in this field. I believed that ICT is just for men because this is what people think. We live in a world full of stereotypes where girls are not seen as logical as boys.

2. What was GirlsGoIT experience like? What did you learn? What was your project about?

GirlsGoIT is the best project I was involved in, starting with the Summer Camp and ending with being the Ambassador of GirlsGoIT Chisinau. During the summer camp, I made my first steps into coding in Python, learned about how it works and the most important thing, I have met a bunch of people that have the same love for computers as I do. After the Summer Camp, I became the Ambassador of GirlsGoIT Chisinau. Our primary goal is to empower young women in ICT. That’s why we did “e-academy” program in March, where 30 girls from Chisinau had the opportunity to taste a little bit of the ICT world. Another program of GirlsGoIT was Bootcamp, which was a 12-week session of Coding and Women Entrepreneurship.

3. Please tell us how you decided to take informatics as one of your final exams for Bacalaureat.

After the GirlsGoIT SummerCamp, I had to choose the fourth Baccalaureate exam. I wasn’t a big fan of Chemistry or Biology and Geography seemed to be pretty boring for me. Informatics felt like the obvious choice for me. Most of my friends said that this would be the stupidest idea I’d ever had because I wouldn’t pass it. Even my teachers were skeptical about me taking Informatics as the fourth exam. They were like: “You’re a girl, and you didn’t even go to any contests. Will you be able to take the exam?” or “Why would you do that, Geography is easy.”.This annoyed me and motivated me to choose Informatics, to prove them that they are wrong. After that, I found out that I was the only girl who wrote BAC exam at Informatics in that Baccalaureate center. Damn, I felt pretty special!

4. How relevant is the course from school? What would you suggest adding in the academic programme?

I am not a fan of the actual curriculum. All those Pascal programmes just make you hate informatics, all my colleagues hated going to that class. Informatics should be about thinking logically, not about copying 30 lines of code from the book without understanding it. So, when students think about informatics, they remember about those awful classes where the teacher made you write code. They don’t know that there is more than Pascal, even more than writing code. There is Design, Database, Robotics, Artificial Intelligence and more. But what do we study in school? A little bit of Microsoft Office in middle school, Pascal, Algorithms, Pascal, Access, Pascal, HTML and Pascal again! We don’t learn how to think logically, how to create a game or how to solve a community problem with the help of IT. We just learn how to write code how the book says.

5. Heard that you have been accepted to study at an university in the Netherlands. What will you study there? What expectations do you have?

I am going to study Knowledge Engineering, which is a combination of Data Science, Computer Science, and Artificial Intelligence. I have huge expectations because the university I have chosen has a particular teaching model based on Problem-Based Learning. It is going to be challenging, but I am excited to start the courses. Furthermore, I want to open a local club of GirlsGoIT there, so the Dutch girls will also know how awesome is the world of IT.

6.
