The former President of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso, attended the Economic Forum “Republic of Moldova in the new regional context”<\/a> organized by the Association of Business People of Moldova. <\/p>\n

Barroso stressed that the European Union with its current leadership wants the best for Moldova. In Commissioner’s opinion, the progress will be achieved by “good governance and rule of law, combating corruption”, but also transparency of political parties’ financing, accountability of the elected candidates, justice sector and prosecution reforms. According to him, these would be the broad political conditions for economical and social progress. <\/p>\n

“Moldova has still a lot to do to create conditions to reach the goals of social and economic progress. I have to tell you frankly that I was quite disappointed when I heard about several cases of corruption and instability in your country. I know how much Moldovan people are expecting this progress in their country. That’s why we believe these reforms need to be supported, need to be done and supported. When you look at the most successful countries in the world, including in the European Union some more than others, those have achieved the highest level of economical and social well-being. Besides being open economies, market economies, there are basically three conditions of success: education, high level of education; infrastructure, from transport to technology in general, and rule! That’s why I always come to the rule of law, because when there is no rule of law, there is no necessary confidence for investment”, said Barroso, referring to the need of justice reforms in Moldova. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Barroso emphasized the need for signing a new agreement with the IMF<\/a>, after conducting the respective reforms in the banking sector, investigating the banking frauds from 2014, recover the diverted funds and bring those responsible to justice. <\/p>\n

The former European official pointed out that it is important to involve the civil society in the dialogue with the political elites in the governing the country, like in the EU. <\/p>\n

“Deliver results, this will bring confidence”, highlighted Barroso. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Forum was organized by the Association of Business People of Moldova, founded by the oligarch Vlad Plahotniuc. <\/p>\n

Plahotniuc, who indirectly controls the government in Moldova, made the statement at the Forum, saying that he would take “a personal responsibility to ensure the stability”<\/strong> in the country.<\/p>\n

The Prime-Minister of Moldova, Pavel Filip, could only ensure that this Government will be the warrant of stability no matter what happens after the Presidential elections and promise to reduce the control institutions from 69 to 14, therefore asking the investors to invest in Moldova. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
