On April 22nd, the Supreme Court of Justice of Moldova accepted the appeal made by the Central Electoral Committee to cancel the initiative regarding the national referendum for changing the Constitution.<\/a> The decision is definite and cannot be attacked. Thus, the referendum will not take place. <\/p>\n

The decision taken in a closed session rules that the initiative of changing the Constitution and the 400 000 signatures are invalid for organizing a referendum. <\/p>\n

Andrei N\u0103stase, leader of the Platform “Dignity and Truth” who organized the collecting of signatures, declared that the decision of the Supreme Court is dictated by political and mafia interests.<\/p>\n

According to the decision of CEC, 405 thousands signatures were collected in the entire Moldova, but the condition of collecting \u201cat least 20 thousands signatures from at least half of the administrative units of second level\u201d wasn\u2019t met.
\nIurie Ciocan, the head of CEC, declared then that only three units, Chi\u0219in\u0103u (42444), B\u0103l\u021bi (24359) and Orhei (22160), got the necessary number of signatures.<\/p>\n

The members of the initiative were claiming that the decision didn\u2019t correspond to the reality. According to them, the Constitution referred to the form of the Republic in 1999, when Moldova had 12 districts, while now it has 39 units, from each it is nearly impossible to collect so many signatures. The project of changing the Constitution was thus signed by 405 thousand people, more than the 200 000 needed.<\/p>\n

The proposal of changing the Constitution made by the Platform includes changing the method of election of the President, changing the number of deputies from 101 to 71 and lifting the protection of the MPs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
