On April 1st, the Parliament of Moldova voted a decision by which the date of October 30, 2016 was established as the date of direct Presidential elections. The decision was voted by the MPs of the Governmental coalition, while the deputies from the Socialists’ Party, Liberal-Democrat Party and the Communists’ Party abstained or voted against the law. <\/p>\n

The draft law was proposed by the former Liberal-Democrat \u0218tefan Creang\u0103, ex-Communist Igor Vremea and the Liberal Roman Bo\u021ban. <\/p>\n

The direct Presidential elections were reintroduced on March 4, after the Constitutional Court of Moldova<\/a> ruled that the changes made in 2001 by the Communists were unconstitutional. <\/p>\n

The mandate of the acting President Nicolae Timofti<\/a> expired on March 23rd. <\/p>\n

The future head of Moldova will need at least half of the votes. Otherwise, the first two candidates with the most of the votes will compete in the second round of elections. The President will be dismissed only if the Parliament finds a serious crime done the head of the state, and only after the people will vote the dismissal in a national referendum.<\/p>\n

First two Presidents of Moldova, Mircea Snegur and Petru Lucinschi, were elected by direct vote, while the last two ones, Vladimir Voronin and Nicolae Timofti, were voted by a 2\/3 majority of the Parliament.<\/p>\n

The possible candidates for the Presidency in the next election are: former Education Minister Maia Sandu, Socialist leader Igor Dodon, former PM Iurie Leanc\u0103, speaker of the Parliament Andrian Candu and leader of the Democrat Party Marian Lupu.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
