Grigore Gacikevici, the former President of the Administration of Council of Banca de Economii (BEM), one of the three failed banks of Moldova in 2014, was freed on March 21 through a decision taken by the Court of Buiucani, Chi\u0219in\u0103u. Prosecutors’ request to prolong his arrest with 30 more days was rejected by the judges on the basis of no legal causes. He was then placed under judiciary control. <\/p>\n

Not long time after the decision was made public and Gacikevici freed, National Anti-Corruption Center (CNA) of Moldova and the prosecutors issued a new order of arrest in another case related to the frauds from BEM. Thus, he was escorted and arrested again. <\/p>\n

Grigore Gacikevici was arrested in December 2015. He is accused of giving ilegal loans of some 260 million lei to three economic agents. Gacikevici led Banca de Economii from 2004 till August 2012, when the BEM Council decided not to prolong his contract. <\/p>\n

The cases related to the frauds done in the three failed banks (Banca de Economii, Banca Social\u0103, Unibank) of Moldova have several suspects even among the government officials: a former Vice-Minister of Economy, deputy head of Public Property Agency, former Vice-Minister of Finances and two Vice-Presidents of the National Commission of the Financial Market. <\/p>\n

Ilan Shor, former head of BEM Council after Gacikevici, and Dorin Dr\u0103gu\u021banu, former Governor of the Moldovan National Bank, the main regulatory institution in the banking system, are still viewed as witnesses by the prosecutors, while the former PM Vlad Filat is seen as a beneficiary of the one-billion grand theft.<\/p>\n
