The United Kingdom together with\u00a0other Governments, the UN and other international organisations, would like to use the\u00a0opportunity to call for greater progress towards achieving absolute equality for women, and\u00a0to celebrate the important contribution women make to our global society and economy.<\/p>\n<p>The UK is a strong supporter and promoter of Women\u2019s rights not only in the UK but also at\u00a0international level, for example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This year is the 150th anniversary of the 1866 petition to Parliament for women\u2019s\u00a0suffrage<\/li>\n<li>The UK is a strong supporter of the UN Convention on the Elimination of all Forms\u00a0of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW);<\/li>\n<li>The UK is committed to addressing violence against women and girls overseas. One\u00a0in three women have experienced physical or sexual violence;<\/li>\n<li>On average women earn 24 per cent less than men globally. In the UK the gender pay\u00a0gap is the lowest on record (19.2%, overall median gap);<\/li>\n<li>Women\u2019s equal participation in political processes is a human right. The UK\u2019s current\u00a0parliament is the most gender balanced\u00a0in British history.\u00a0 A third of the Cabinet are\u00a0women.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Education represents a core element in a woman\u2019s personal development which allows her to\u00a0become an active member of society. The Chevening scholarships scheme (funded by the\u00a0Foreign and Commonwealth Office) offers a unique opportunity for future leaders,\u00a0influencers, and decision-makers from all over the world to develop professionally and\u00a0academically.<\/p>\n<p>We would like to present you the stories of 3 energetic, hard-working and inspiring\u00a0Moldovan women, who participated in the Chevening scheme and achieved significant career\u00a0goals. They are: Corina Cepoi, (University of Oxford, Linacre College, Media Law and\u00a0Policy Programme, 1998, current position: Country Director, Internews), Cristina L\u00eesii\u00a0(University of Sheffield, MA Governance and Public Policy, 2013-2014, current position:\u00a0Communication &amp; Outreach Officer at UNDP Moldova) and Svetlana Moisei (Oxford\u00a0University, PhD on Intercultural Issues, 2005-2006, current position: teacher). We asked\u00a0them to answer 4 questions and here are the replies:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. What does women empowerment mean for you?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to all 3 ladies, empowerment means personal development and having the choice\u00a0in life:<\/p>\n<p>Cristina: to me women empowerment it very much related to human development.<\/p>\n<p>Corina: to have choices in life, to decide freely what to pursue and to be able to accomplish\u00a0whatever you would have in mind, either professionally or personally<\/p>\n<p>Svetlana: the possibility for woman to choose what place to take in the family or in the\u00a0society<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. What career challenges have you faced being a women?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cristina: Being a single young woman from Chisinau, I have been privileged, so the\u00a0challenges I faced in my career are fairly different from those of other women. But, I have\u00a0witnessed such challenges towards women like: disregard, low expectations or expectations\u00a0of taking up traditional \u201cwomen roles\u201d in career.<\/p>\n<p>Corina: Career challenges for me were very few due to the times we live when gender\u00a0equality is on the agenda. Otherwise, the hardest was to combine having children and\u00a0continuing work and study. If not for the support of my family (my husband especially),\u00a0working for a non-profit organization and having great women colleagues, all that would not\u00a0have been possible.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. What is your proudest achievement?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cristina: I am the first Masters graduate in my family, from a prestigious British school \u2013\u00a0University of Sheffield, which I was able to attend thanks to the British Government and the\u00a0Chevening Program. This has opened up interesting career opportunities for me and I work\u00a0now at UNDP. I have been volunteering since 2008 and I believe in the moral imperative of\u00a0each person is to give back to the community. Having high expectations of myself, however,\u00a0I consider my most important achievements are still to come.<\/p>\n<p>Corina: My family and my work are going hand in hand. I am happy of things accomplished\u00a0in Moldova and glad I went ahead to\u00a0work abroad, another challenge with a different\u00a0environment, culture and traditions to keep in mind while striving for change in the field of\u00a0my expertise.<\/p>\n<p>Svetlana: I could write that my proudest achievement is a great number of students who have\u00a0graduated prestigious universities from Europe. Still, my greatest achievement to my point of\u00a0view is my getting to a balance in life. Spiritual, social, intellectual, professional and personal\u00a0that is what matters most!<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. What women has influenced you the most?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cristina: A friend has told me once that life is a marathon, not a sprint. And as in a marathon\u00a0every step counts, the support and cheers along the way, the same goes for our career and life.\u00a0I couldn\u2019t point to one woman without unjustly leaving out the rest, female writers that have\u00a0impacted my world view and helped me become a feminist, the friends and colleagues, that\u00a0have inspire me all the way through my live.<\/p>\n<p>Svetlana: I have been blessed with strong female role models throughout my life. Now I\u00a0thank all of them for their contribution into my becoming a mother a woman, a lady.<\/p>\n<p>Corina: My mom, being strong and raising her kids with little support from others and my\u00a0mentor, a former American\u00a0journalist, publisher, spokesperson, Carole Brennan (now a\u00a0partner in law firm). In different ways, these women showed me strength of\u00a0character and,\u00a0along with other people, supported and inspired me.
