The Constitutional Court of Moldova decided on March 4 that the President of the Republic must be elected directly by the people, and not by the Parliament.<\/p>\n

According to the head of the Court, Alexandru T\u0103nase, the decision, demanded by the Liberal-Democrats, was made to avoid the future political crisis, but also to edit the articles that contradict each other in regard to representative democracy. Moreover, T\u0103nase stressed out that the previous changes made in 2001 were unconstitutional.
\n<\/code><\/p>\n

The Presidential elections will be probably announced after the mandate of the current President Nicolae Timofti ends on March 16 2016. The future head of Moldova will need at least half of the votes. Otherwise, the first two candidates with the most of the votes will compete in the second round of elections. The President will be dismissed only if the Parliament finds a serious crime done the head of the state, and only after the people will vote the dismissal in a national referendum. <\/p>\n

First two Presidents of Moldova, Mircea Snegur and Petru Lucinschi, were elected by direct vote, while the last two ones, Vladimir Voronin and Nicolae Timofti, were voted by a 2\/3 majority of the Parliament. <\/p>\n

The possible candidates for the Presidency in the next election are: former Education Minister Maia Sandu, Socialist leader Igor Dodon, former PM Iurie Leanc\u0103, speaker of the Parliament Andrian Candu and leader of the Democrat Party Marian Lupu. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
