On Monday, September 21st, Dorin Dragutanu, the governor of the National Bank of Moldova, declared his resignation at a press-conference.<\/p>\n

He stated that the politicians do not want to investigate the theft from the three Moldovan banks (BEM, Banca Sociala, Unibank) and moreover, he doesn’t want the National Bank (BNM) and himself to be blamed for the lost billion euros\/dollars.<\/p>\n

Dragutanu’s resignation was assisted by that of the Vice-Governor Marin Molosag. Both of them told that they will temporarily stay on their positions to maintain the leadership, until the Parliament votes another Governor:<\/p>\n

We will stay on our positions for the sake of the good state of BNM and until the designation of the new leadership. The reason of our leaving is the pressure made by politicians upon us. Time will show who was behind these attacks. Probably they have already the convenient candidates”, tried to confess the Governor.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Even if the the law states that the National Bank of Moldova is responsible for supervising and managing the banking system, both Governor and Vice-Governor blamed the Governments of Iurie Leanca (2013-2014), Chiril Gaburici (2015) and Valeriu Strelet (2015-present) for not taking actions against the huge losses of money from the banks.<\/p>\n

Dragutanu particularly addressed his accusations to the current PM Strelet:<\/p>\n

“How can you say that the US dollar might rise up to 40 lei, and then declare that the National Bank should take the necessary measures to control the situation and to stop the depreciation of the LEU until the International Monetary Fund leaves?”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Regarding the second step of investigation and referring to PM Strelet, Dragutanu said that Kroll, the needed audit company, proposed a fair contract fee and, that actually the contract is not wanted by politicians because it would compromise them.<\/p>\n

In response, the Prime-Minister declared that “it is a responsible and courageous decision, but by it,” Dragutanu takes the responsibility of what happens in the banking sector.<\/p>\n

“I think mister Dragutanu cannot stand the critic towards him. It is something usual to have this type of critics, while the system has such big problems. We have the moral right to ask what happens to our national currency”, said the PM of Moldova.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Strelet stressed that the resignation of the Governor might affect somehow the negotiations with the International Monetary Fund, but the Government is ready for them.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, on the same day, the President of the Moldovan Parliament, Andrian Candu, asked the International Monetary Fund to evaluate the activity of BNM in the period of the frauds. He sent a special letter to the IMF:<\/p>\n
