The Parliament of the Republic of Moldova held on December 2nd a special session about the case of the lost billion (or more) from the three Moldovan banks. The Communists proposed to close the session to the public opinion for the sake of secrecy. Thus, the decision was voted by the Communists, the Democrats and the Liberals, while the Socialists and the Liberal-Democrats were against, saying that there is nothing to hide from the citizens. <\/p>\n

Ghimpu, the Liberal leader, even declared:<\/p>\n

“Let’s see what we want. I think in such a situation the report is presented to the Parliament, not to the society. I propose the session to be closed”, told Ghimpu.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The hearing included the speeches of the General Prosecutor Corneliu Gurin, the Governor of the National Bank Dorin Dragutanu, the Information Service director Mihai Balan, the manager of the Anti-Corruption Center Viorel Chetraru and the Minister of Finances Anatol Arapu.

\nThe session was eventually open in the second part, after two hours of hearing of the General Prosecutor. Latter declared publicly later that Vlad Filat supposedly received around 176 million US dollars or even more from then the head of the three banks, Ilan Shor, for some business preferences. Moreover, asked how Shor had so much money to bribe, Gurin said laconically: “From the banks. It wasn’t his personal money. He used the money from the banks to bribe and to gain benefits. The situation has gone so far that he couldn’t resist”.<\/p>\n

In his turn, Viorel Chetraru, the head of the Anti-Corruption prosecutors told that his center launched 44 penal cases, 20 of whom were sent to trial. Accordingly, 54 big loans are being investigated, 28 million lei, 44 real estate, goods and agricultural equipment are confiscated.
\nIn total, 386 persons were questioned, 111 confiscations and 56 liftings of goods, 36 processes of expertise, 49 information requests were done.<\/p>\n

14 persons are accused and eight of them are under trial. <\/p>\n

In order to track the money, the investigators had to find traces leading to such countries as Latvia, Cyprus, Switzerland, Germany, China, Estonia, Russia, Great Britain, Panama.<\/p>\n

According to Chetraru, “a big part of the money came back in Moldova, including the airport”, suggesting that Ilan Shor, owner of Avia Invest, got some money back from the thefts and loan frauds.<\/p>\n

Deschide.md<\/a> Socialist Igor Dodon stated that some money was used by Vlad Filat to buy such media institutions as Unimedia, Ziarul National and Vocea Basarabiei. Dodon says that even Liberal-Democrats write pleas against Filat and that the General Prosecutor confirmed the frauds done by Ion Rusu, the godfather of the LD leader. <\/p>\n

Still, the General Prosecutor and the Anti-Corruption head didn’t suggest that the investigators can retrieve money from the lost billion euros or dollars. The traces are too complicated, they say.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
