The President of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova, Andrian Candu, had a visit to Brussels to be questioned by the Committee for Foreign Affairs of the European Parliament.

\nOther than promising a Pro-European Parliamentary majority and excluding the possibility of early elections in Moldova, Candu had to answer uncomfortable questions by the members of the Committee.
\nPetras Au\u0161trevi\u010dius, MEP-rapporteur for the Republic, stressed that political situation is only about disappointment and loss of trust and that Moldova is too small to be dominated by the oligarchs:<\/p>\n

The EU doesn’t want an extra regional crisis and we do not want Moldova to enter that. I would like to ask you: What should be done to diminish the influence of oligarchs in country’s politics? Moldova is too small to be dominated by one, two or three oligarchs, in general.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In his diplomatic way, Candu responded that “the names of the people don’t matter”, and that the institutional structure needs to be changed.<\/p>\n

Moreover, the Romanian MEP, Cristian Preda, asked the Moldovan Speaker to comment on the role of the oligarchs in the politics of Moldova and especially on Vlad Plahotniuc’s role, who is the patron of Candu’s party: <\/p>\n

Do you think it is good to leave them in the Moldovan politics, if you aspire for EU membership, or you will erase them totally?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/strong>
\nCandu again complained about the guilt of the human factor in the state institutions. <\/p>\n

Same Preda asked if there is any possibility to attract the Communists in a large coalition for the future Government.
\nIn response, the Moldovan Speaker told that there are sufficient “Pro-European” forces at Chisinau for a Government, but he is not denying Communists’ participation in the election of the President in spring.

Furthermore, Candu had to meet the European Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighborhood Policy, Johannes Hahn. Usually soft and tolerant, Hahn underlined that Moldova needs a reset<\/strong> and needs to rip from the past and form new political elite.
\nThe Commissioner stated that the Government from Chisinau should take the responsibility of accelerating the reforms and “the cleaning, without limitations and preferences”.
