Maxim Shevchenko, a journalist and a member of the Council of the President of the Russian Federation, declared<\/a> that the union of Moldova and Romania and that of Transnistria and Russia are both possible.<\/p>\n

In his interview for RSN, he stated the following:<\/p>\n

Moldova is an interesting topic. When speaking about Moldova, we should take in account two things: it’s an orthodox country, the Moldovans, with the same religion as the most Russians, are strongly tied to our nation and millions of them live and work in Russia, we can meet Moldovans daily on the streets. The current situation in Moldova has two causes. First, it’s about the big theft from the state budget, a billion euros, a quarter of the budget- truth or not, this what the protesters say and I believe them. I cannot understand how Moldova is still a devastated and poor country, when its people are so hardworking and good. Second- a big part of the Moldovan people want reunion with Romania. This idea should be discussed very carefully. The reunion of Crimea with Russia created a precedent for other regions of Europe. For the European Union, Crimea is an accident, but Crimea and Moldova are legit and furthermore, Kosovo will want union with Albania. I think the things should be solved by a referendum. I was for the entrance of Crimea into Russia, and now the Crimeans live better in Russia than in Ukraine. Regarding the Republic of Moldova and the union with Romania- they are a nation, let’s be honest, they speak the same language. The difference is like the difference between the Russian spoken in Crimea and that spoken in other regions of Russia. That’s why, in exchange for giving Transnistria independence to enter Russia, Moldova can go to Romania, it it wants- why not. Transnistria would exist like the Kaliningrad region. That would help our relations with the nation of Moldova and Romania.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
