The so-called Pridnestrovian Moldovan Republic, the break-away region of the Republic of Moldova, is celebrating today, on September 2nd, the day of its independence.<\/p>\n

It self-proclaimed as an independent republic on September 2nd, 1990, being supported by the conservative forces of the Kremlin and by the former 14th Soviet Army (about 2500 soldiers).<\/p>\n

The region was and it is still populated by Russians called sometimes Kossacks, by Ukrainians and by Moldovans as a minority only.<\/p>\n

The proclamation was followed by a series of acts of intimidation towards the legal authorities of Moldova. The peak of the conflict was the War on Nistru from March till July 1992, began by clashes between the Transnistrian militia backed by Russian troops and Moldovan legal police. Lacking a real army then, young Moldova suffered a lot because of casualties, which counted hundreds of dead civilians, policemen and volunteers.<\/p>\n

The war and the independence of the separatists was backed by Russia, who wanted to keep its imperial influence upon former Soviet states. Thus, it was actually a war between the Republic cof Moldova and the old-new Russian Federation, even if Russians “offered” a peace-keeping mission on the Nistru river.<\/p>\n

The special status of Transnistria was established through the truce signed by Russian President Boris Eltzin, the separatist leader Igor Smirnov and the Moldova’s first President Mircea Snegur, and then provided by the Moldovan Constitution in 1994.<\/p>\n

Since then, Transnistria has worked as a point of destabilization for Moldova and why not, for the Eastern Europe.<\/p>\n

As usual, the day of independence of separatist Transnistria is celebrated with a military parade, which has the goal to show the untouchable pride and patriotism and to hide the serious economic crisis in the region.<\/p>\n
