From Ukraine to Uruguay, Moldova to the Philippines, The US Chamber of Commerce and its foreign affiliates became the biggest lobbyist of the tobacco industry, by fighting the anti-smoking laws, writes New York Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n

The U.S. Chamber\u2019s work in support of the tobacco industry in recent years has emerged as a priority at the same time the industry has faced one of the most serious threats in its history. A global treaty, negotiated through the World Health Organization, mandates anti-smoking measures and also seeks to curb the influence of the tobacco industry in policy making. The treaty, which took effect in 2005, has been ratified by 179 countries; holdouts include Cuba, Haiti and the United States.<\/p>\n

Facing a wave of new legislation around the world, the tobacco lobby has turned for help to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, with the weight of American business behind it. While the chamber\u2019s global tobacco lobbying has been largely hidden from public view, its influence has been widely felt.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Referring to Moldova, the authors mention:<\/p>\n

The Moldovan president was warned against \u201cextreme measures\u201d in his country, though they included common steps like restricting smoking in public places and banning advertising where cigarettes are sold.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\u00a0Beside this, the article presents how the American Chamber of Commerce from Moldova, represented in 2013 by Sergey Toncu, warned several times the central authorities, especially the Ministry of Health. Also, the most interesting statement regarding the tobacco industry was made by the same Toncu:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe consumption of alcohol and cigarettes is at the discretion of each person,\u201d Mr. Toncu said at one meeting, adding that the discussion should not be about \u201cwhether smoking is harmful.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

On the other side, Oleg Chelaru, a member of the staff that was working on the anti-smoking law, stated:<\/p>\n
