The former separatist leader, Igor Smirnov, intends to return to the political life in the Transnistrian region, after more than four years of silence.<\/p>\n

According to some sources of Moldova.ORG from the former Transnistrian administration, Smirnov intends to stand for election in November this year, in one of the Tiraspol city constituencies as a MP in the so-called Supreme Soviet.\u00a0 Moreover, according to the same source, Smirnov is targeting the position of speaker of the future \u201cparliament” of Tiraspol.<\/p>\n

Smirnov is Successful in the Informal Polls<\/b><\/p>\n

Some unofficial polls indicate that the ambitions of Smirnov have a huge rating among the public confidence.\u00a0 This happens while the current Tiraspol leader, Evgheni Sevciuk, has lost his popularity due to austerity measures taken – cutting pensions and salaries by 30%.<\/p>\n

The same source informed us that Smirnov is not yet decided whether to participate in the autumn elections in alliance with Sevciuk’s opponents or as an independent candidate.\u00a0 Smirnov relies on a possible aid from Moscow and, at the end of May, he delegated the former \u201cdeputy president\u201d of Transnistria, Alexandr Koroliov, in the capital of Russian Federation to promote his message among some deputies in the State Duma and even in the administration of Rogozin.<\/p>\n

Some experts from the region note that the success of Smirnov might be obvious, but the election results will be closely related to the development of the relations between Sevciuk and the heads of Sheriff corporation – Gusan and Kazmaly who, de facto, \u201cwill decide the future structure of the Transnistrian supreme soviet\u201d.<\/p>\n

Who Could be Smirnov\u2019s Allies?<\/b><\/p>\n

MP Anatol Dirun may be the ally of Smirnov in the November elections, with whom he intends to found an opposition party named People’s Front in autumn.\u00a0 These intentions could be compromised, given that Anatol Dirun has been recently persecuted by the KGB of Tiraspol.<\/p>\n

Expert Opinion<\/b><\/p>\n

Invited by Moldova.ORG to comment Smirnov’s reappearance in politics of Transnistria, Oazu Nantoi, expert on Transnistrian issues, says that he has no chance to return into key positions.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut as long as he was not arrested, shot or drowned in the Nistru river, he could return at any time to continue mocking on Moldovans\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n

Nantoi believes that he has no real chance to be voted en masse because \u201cit is not people who take the political decisions in the Transnistrian region\u201d.\u00a0 \u201cThe atmosphere of fear, propaganda, pressures by KGB – their presence cannot in any way guarantee the fairness of the elections\u201d, he added.<\/p>\n

Ion Manole, Director of Promo-LEX Association, says that the situation in the Transnistrian region has not improved after Sevciuk\u2019s coming.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnfortunately, I noticed that things have not only failed to improved, but, they have worsened in some aspects. Shevchuk’s team used the trust and openness of the international stakeholders and continued simulating a dialogue in order to obtain financing and support not only from the Russian Federation, but also from the West through various programs and projects. Like in the case of the Russian Federation, Sevciuk administration has received support from other international stakeholders, without contributing or accepting any improvement of the situation regarding the human rights\u201d, he explained.<\/p>\n

Manole stressed that\u00a0compared with the Smirnov administration, Sevciuk has fooled everyone and took advantage of the goodwill of some stakeholders without\u00a0promoting, monitoring and protection of human rights in the region.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn fact, nobody even dares to ask such a thing to Tiraspol, because they are immediately blackmailed by stopping the political dialogue. In these circumstances, the region’s population is hostage and people’s fundamental rights and freedoms or democratic principles and values do not matter – one thing matters: the alleged dialogue without substance, purpose and impact on local inhabitants.
