The local elections in most of the cities and villages of the Republic of Moldova took place on Sunday, June 14th.<\/p>\n

According to the Central Electoral Commission of Moldova<\/a>, 48,95% or 1.381.719 people participated in the voting process.<\/p>\n

The results show that the Socialists (Pro-Russian), the Liberal-Democrats (Pro-European), the Democrats (Pro-European), the Communists (neutral), the Liberals (Pro-European) and the “Casa Noastra” members won most of the votes in the city and district councils. The polls also show that there is a increasing number of independent candidates that win in both council and leadership elections (Straseni, Cahul, Taraclia, Comrat). It is also amazing that in 10 villages, 10 candidates each won 100% of people’s votes.<\/p>\n

The capital of Moldova, Chisinau, will have a second tour of elections, after none of the candidates won more than 50% in the first tour. Thus, the electoral contest is getting tighter and harder between Zinaida Greceanii (35,68%), former Pro-Russian PM, and Dorin Chirtoaca (37,52%), current Liberal mayor of the capital, both criticized and hated by the public opinion, but still voted for some geopolitical reasons.<\/p>\n

The surprises were the results from the elections in Balti and Orhei, where the elected mayors are the millionaires Renato Usatii (72,46%) and Ilan Shor (61,97%). Usatii is known for doing big business in Russia with the Russian RailRoads and having links with the Russian mafia. By organizing\u00a0several concerts of Russian artists in Moldova, he won the fame of a modest grown-up worker from a simple family, so his victory in Balti, the Pro-Russian city from North, is not quite a surprise. At the same time, Ilan Shor, a Jewish businessman, has gained attention in the last year, when being involved in the stealing of one billion euros from three Moldovan banks, after leading them. He engaged in the electoral campaign for the leadership of Orhei, his hometown, while being under arrest, but this didn’t change people’s opinion, even if he was directly involved in the stealing of one billion euros from three Moldovan banks in November 2014<\/a>. Now, he claims to be the mayor-investor of Orhei, which seems a really good slogan for a millionaire that wants to wash his reputation through social and investment projects.<\/p>\n

The leaders of the Pro-European parties (PLDM, PDM, PDM) declared that they will form local coalitions in councils. Vlad Filat, the leader of the Liberal-Democrats, stressed the importance of improving the local progress, by forming Pro-European majorities.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, the so-called “Pro-European” majorities proved to be useless, corrupted and lazy in the last four years in city, village and district councils.<\/p>\n

The local popularity of the Pro-European forces is continuing to decrease because of the few progress in the fight against corruption and poverty done by the central government, as it was needed to prove. The people are starting to vote for Pro-Russian parties just to vote against the so-called “Pro-European” majority, dominated by oligarchs.<\/p>\n
