The citizens of Moldova lost their trust in the European cause and future, mainly because of the current government. At least that’s what a number of experts think, experts like the director of the Public Policy Institute, Arcadie Barbaro\u0219ie<\/strong>, the executive director of ADEPT, Igor Bo\u021ban<\/strong> an expert at the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS) in Brussels, Michael Emerson<\/strong> and an expert at the European Institute for Security Studies in Paris, Nicu Popescu<\/strong>. In a radio broadcast produced by the Foreign Policy Association of Moldova in partnership with Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, they analyzed the current position of Moldova’s foreign policy and European perspective in the current social-political context.<\/p>\n

According to the experts, Moldova faces an ideological crisis caused by the governing political parties that associated the idea of European integration with their own policies and actions.<\/p>\n

“Since 2009 we have had a pro-European government and the situation has worsened. The citizens\u2019 conclusion is that the pro-European parties cannot ensure what they promised and thus, the citizens\u2019 hopes and expectations did not find any answer in the performance of the government. Hence the great disappointment and conclusions like: They are liars and what they promise cannot in principle be realized”, says Arcadie Barbaro\u0219ie<\/strong>. ” Moreover, the governments that we have had in the last years had in their name, in one form or another, the word \u201cEuropean\u201d – the pro-European alliance and the pro-European coalition”, he added.<\/p>\n

“The citizens conclude that under the guise of European integration the corrupt political clans are solving their own problems, getting richer, while the citizens are getting disappointed and desperate. This involution of the expectations for the European vector is explained by the fact that the banner carriers proved to be false. The banner remains for a large part of society as a landmark, while the carriers have to be probably changed”, claims Igor Bo\u021ban<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

To straighten it’s position and revert to the European vector, the government would have to undertake a number of reforms and attitude changes.<\/p>\n

“Perhaps the most pressing action and the most urgent results expected by the citizens are to get clarification as to what happened to the three banks, primarily to Banca de Economii. The cases that some politicians talk about should be taken to court.” – Arcadie Barbaro\u0219ie<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

“When referring to failures, I mean primarily lack of progress in fighting against corruption, but also the conflicts within the coalition, breaking of alliances and parties, failure to form a majority government … So, this situation of permanent political scandal does not look good in any country.” – Nicu Popescu<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

“The first thing they have got to do with respect to the European policy is a bit more openness in implementing the Association and the Free Trade Area Agreement which represents in due course huge opportunities for Moldova.” – Michael Emerson<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Nonetheless, the continuation of integration in the European space is inevitable, even if delayed, say the experts.<\/p>\n

“This is a long process, but it\u2019s inevitable business.” – Michael Emerson<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

“Strategically speaking, I am optimistic. If the current or the next government will not orient themselves towards European integration, the following one will do so. There is no other way.” – Arcadei Barbaro\u0219ie<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

“There is no other way out. We must engage in this process and my opinion is that it is better to start going out of this stagnation in the mire of absolute corruption, taking into account the regional context, the international factors, and our internal capacity.” – Igor Bo\u021ban<\/strong><\/p>\n
