On Wednesday, April 8th, the National Anti-Corruption Center of Moldova detained 16 persons for 72 hours from the medical system, including the former Minister of Healthcare, Andrei Usatyi, actual Director of the Republican Hospital.<\/p>\n

The officers are investigating them as supposedly guilty in the case of the suspicious public acquisitions. The persons are suspected of abuse of authority, giving and receiving bribes.\u00a0Beside the suspects, 5 people were interviewed without being arrested and one thousand pages of phone calls were registered.<\/p>\n

The chief of the Prosecution Department of the Center, Bogdan Zumbreanu, announced that 69 searches have been made at the relevant offices, departments, but also at suspects’ homes.<\/p>\n

The officer specified that the investigations began in November 2014, when the National Anti-Corruption Center noticed the illegitimate operations done within the process of public acquisition of medical equipment.<\/p>\n

“According to some initial information, representatives from two companies were offering amounts of money worth 5-10% of the equipment’ cost to the officials from the Pharmaceutical Agency, Agency for Public Acquisitions and from the Ministry of Health, in order to win the public auctions”, said Zumbreanu.<\/p>\n

The officer said that one accepted offer was 2,5 million lei more expensive than the cheapest offer. Thus, 20 public auctions, whose value is over 200 million lei, are under investigation.<\/p>\n

Beside the ex-Minister, Andrei Usatyi, there have been arrested 9 responsible persons: Gheorghe Ciobanu, the chief of the Emergency Hospital of Chisinau, Alexandru Coman, the director of the Pharmaceutical Agency, Vitalie Moscalu, the chief of the Cardiology Hospital, Turcanu Serghei, the Vice-Director of the Penitentiary Department, Victor Cernat, the director of the Oncology Hospital, Andrei Testemitanu, the director of the Republican Center of Diagnosis, Valeriu Jelev, the director of the Regional Hospital of Taraclia, Hagioglo Alexandru, the Vice-Director of the Health Center Cahul and Ghenadie Grib, the Vice-Director of the Agency for Public Acquisitions.<\/p>\n
